The scene with Carl was one of those scenes where we intentionally don't see things, so that we briefly think of certain things certain characters do as confusing or bad. Carl raised the gun because he saw Shane's body start to twitch and move. We don't see that because of the camera angle, and therefore we don't see Shane until he's standing up. So, Carl pointed the gun at Shane, not Rick.

In the comics Shane only lasted for 6 issues, so if the show followed the comics he would have died in season one episode 3, but I think Jon Bernthal did such of a good job that they changed it. Just like how Norman Reedus audition for Merle but they wanted Michael Rooker for Merle, so they made Merle have a brother name Daryl for Norman
