The 4th Hokage uses two jutsu to seal nine tails but yeah one of them is reaper death seal and 8 Eight Trigrams Sealing (reference from ep53, when Jiraiya trained Naruto)

TL;DR: If someone goes *poof* and theres a LOG, thats a substitution. If they go *poof* and completely disintegrate into water, air, bugs, etc. That was a CLONE. Also Brandon, small detail, remember that theres a difference between SUBSTITUTIONS and CLONES. (I know grammatically, you can say they "substituted" themselves WITH a clone, but for simplicity's sake substitutions are separate.) That means the actual person replaced themselves with a LOG as they got hit, which also means they're still NEARBY somewhere. With CLONES that can fight for you (shadow clones, bug clones), they can go *poof* and the real person could have been somewhere else the ENTIRE time.

4th time I watch this series and saw something I missed. Hokage Sarutobi, he uses the Monkey King Son Goku’s staff. No wonder he can summons the Ape. That staff in ancient Chinese lore is the pillar that holds the whole world’s ocean kingdom water from collapsing. Just kool lore.
