Always heard of this movie but never watched it before - it felt too much like a kid movie when it came out so I wasn't interested. Same as you, very surprised by many things and definitely entertaining, so thank you for having me watching it lol

The more I watch this movie, the more little details jump out at me. Especially the town and townspeople--the town was wrecked after Sarah and Alan played and even before Judy and Peter started playing. It looked like Back to the Future part II in the alternate reality. Really amazing detail. I've loved this one since it came out, even if it creeped me out the first time!

At the end of the movie, they went back in time because per the rules of the game, "the exciting EFFECTS of the game...will disappear" once the game has been finished. Everything that happened in their lives and in the lives of those around them derived from the game.

I never said that’s how it should be 🤨 He clearly loved Alan and regretted how things had been between them, and after getting perspective as an adult, Alan understood that too, which led to them building a healthy bond. Relationships are rarely black and white and understanding where people are coming from to USE that to improve them is hardly “BS.”

It has to be connected to how (traditionally in the play, and in most movie adaptations including the Disney animated film) the children's father in Peter Pan is the same actor/voice as Captain Hook. Except in the Robin Williams movie Hook, I guess - although Dustin Hoffman voiced the airplane captain before appearing onscreen as Captain Hook in that movie.

This reaction was so much fun! I'm so glad you watched the original Jumanji before going into the new ones - they're all a lot of fun and here are some small details they work into the new ones that pay tribute to Robin Williams. Shout-out to James Horner's score in this one; the main game theme is properly spooky. Can't wait for the "Welcome to the Jungle" reaction!

I agree with you, too. I prefer practical effects over the CGI. The monkey's look very uncanny today. I'd love to see a remastered version of this movie where all the CGI was optimized :D Could you imagine?

Was he responsible for the drums? I swear those drums get me 1000x more scared than the Jaws theme does.

I disagree but ESPECIALLY on the second part. The dad was objectively awful. Even though he was having a bad day, it's clear that's how he usually was. Just because it was "normal" for fathers back then to not be nurturing or affectionate, we can still look back and acknowledge that isn't how it SHOULD have been. I grew up with a father who didn't really show my sisters and I, or even tell us, that he loved us, and I just grew up thinking that was normal. He still loved us, he just didn't know how to show it. But isn't a vital part of loving someone being able to tell/show them that you love them? So I don't listen to that BS anymore.

On this note, Robin Williams was one of the most incredible actors to ever exist. This movie is a great example of how he could incorporate his comedic genius with moments that also break your heart. He was an actor who could do anything. There will never be another like him.

God I adore this movie, it's one of those movies I don't think about much but whenever it comes up I'm like hell yeah! It's Jumanji! :D Really looking forward to you watching the others! Into the Jungle took me by surprise, I assumed it would be a lazy cash-grab but it's actually so good!

I used to think my first horror movie was Signs when I was 12, but I realize now that Jumanji was my first horror movie. Nevertheless, I LOVE this movie so much! It’s dramatic, it’s funny, it’s scary, it holds a special place in my heart.

Yes, they did have the same actor that played the father as the hunter. They did do that on purpose as the clue read, “… will make you feel just like a child.”

This movie and Mrs. Doubtfire used to be the movies I watched on the rare occasion that I was home sick from school.

I watched this a few months ago, and before that it had been years since I’d seen this movie. I admit that I’m very sensitive when it comes to Robin Williams films nowadays, but the scene where he comes back and is yelling for his mom and dad only to find out that they passed had me SOBBING.

There is also a space off shoot of Jumanji called Zathura that I vividly remember re-watching over and over as a kid. It would be great if you could check it out before the modern Jumanji’s. :)

Also, the guy who did the music for this, James Horner, also did the score for Titanic, Deep Impact, Aliens, The Abyss, and Avatar, among others (did a lot of Cameron's films obviously). He's one of my favorite film composers, and his work has always been very recognizable to me. I usually suspect it's his either from the light, emotive melodies he uses, or the heavy industrial stings during action sequences. Funny enough, when I saw Deep Impact I didn't know that OR this was him, but a light melody near the beginning made me think of Jumanji, and I wondered if it was the same composer for both films. I laughed when I saw it not only was, but Horner of all people. 😛 He's everywhere.

Sick double upload today....wasn't ready to watch Moana 2 yet, which I haven't seen but will be glad to watch with you for the first time. But this is a nice casual, in-the-background sort of film to throw on. Thanks for this!! Love this film, classic from my childhood. The visual effects are fairly dated now but were mind blowing at the time, this film was nothing less than a visual spectacle for its time.

This is absolutely a children's horror movie! XD I watched it exactly once as a kid and never again...until now! Thank you for the reaction. I think you'll be delighted to find that the new Jumanji has more laughs. Also, for a funny Robin Williams movie I'd highly recommend Mrs. Doubtfire--it's a great blend of very funny and very moving.

Hot take, this is a good movie but I actually like the remake/quasi sequel more, so looking forward to that! I thought the same as you (and everyone else) back when I first saw this - that the dad was awful and mean, not really appreciating that everything I know about the man comes from one bad day. He's not bad, it's just that he has a stressful, high-responsibility job that likely keeps him away from his family, and in the 60s fathers weren't exactly encouraged to be nurturing and affectionate so he didn't really know how to relate to his son. It's funny how we immediately take the kids' side in movies and forget how complicated relationships can be.

No way! I haven't seen this movie in like a decade, and I was JUST talking to my boyfriend about how good this movie is a few days ago. Apparently he's never seen it before either! Looking forward to the nostalgia trip with this one :D
