Eclipse comes from a colony of frugovores (fruit eaters), his teeth are big and scary but blunt, his colony eats roots and juicy vegetables but go collectively apeshit for raw fruit. The suck up the juice and eat the pulp and scatter the seeds, helping new trees grow.
Willow (and her brother Umbra) come from a colony of sanguinivores (blood feeders). Vampire bat ponies are very, very rare, as they have quite a frightening, negative stigma attached to them. There's lots of old pony's tales of vampires sneaking in to homes at night, sinking fangs into the throats of helpless ponies and draining them dry, even turning them into undead mind-slaves. Willow writes this off as ponies being silly and hysterical- Blood bats don't plunge their fangs into the throats of screaming victims, they actually use their sharp, sharp incisors to shear off a bit of flesh, and lick up the blood that follows. Their saliva has an an anticoagulant compound that prevents blood from clotting.
Blood bats nowadays consume a more varied diet, including nectar, fruit, and meat, but must consume a meal of blood about every two days. It typically comes from goats and pigs (and is purchased at the market, they're not uncivilized).

Aaand I’m already getting Batfam headcanons as we speak cause of course I do. Like how being vampire bats is what prevented Willow and Umbra from getting adopted (and added to their feelings of isolation growing up), and how bat ponies form and reinforce their various social bonds (parent and offsprings, mates, friendships, etc). I’m thinking typically (with exceptions of course) they mate for life (and sometimes with more then one. That just depends on the individual like in any culture) and take great stock on deep emotional connections between partners...something Willow struggled with when Noct started earnestly courting her (which usually involves grooming each other’s coats and other forms of sweet acts of bonding). Ugh. I swear I’ll try to find time to write these down XD

Speaking of which I am SO sorry I haven’t commented on any of your recent drawings. Been very busy here, but in very good ways :) But I swear on baby Finnie I was going to make time this weekend and totally geek out about the latest AMAZING pandora chapter and the rest: :) as always hope everything is going good for you!!! <3 )

can I just say that I love it when you bring actual science into your headcanons, Miss Oddity? I think it makes the characters more interesting, and adds a layer of realism/legitimacy into your work. not to mention that it had never occurred to me that there could be herbivorous AND carnivorous bat ponies.
