Luster Dawn is a student of magic, as encouraged by her father Sunburst and bio mom/"auntie" Starlight Glimmer. Her real passion, however, lies in inventing. She greatly idolizes her dad, Flash Sentry, and wishes nothing more than to fly like him someday. When Starlight eagerly informs Luster she knows a powerful sustained levitation spell, Luster politely declines, saying she wants to craft a mechanical set of wings not reliant on unicorn magic, so the gift of flight can be shared with the world. Starlight considers this a silly pipe dream, and really wishes Luster would spend less time looking like a greasemonkey and more time studying to be a proper mage- perhaps even a protege to one of the princesses eventually....perhaps (Starlight hopes), a princess herself, someday.
Unfortunately Luster isn't remotely interested in becoming a princess......she's honestly not even sure she's interested in being a mare at all. I think for now, Luster is okay with being addressed as she/her, but she's still figuring herself out. Most likely, she (he) is transmasculine.
Despite being chipper and relatively well-adjusted, Luster isn't especially interested in making friends. Friends feel like a distraction from her work, and friendships are more trouble than they're worth to maintain. Curiously enough, because Luster doesn't try to force friendship, she gets along surprisingly well with her cousin/older sister, Midnight Abyss. They can sometimes be spotted studying/tinkering together in enjoyable quiet, escaping the nosy gaze of their parents. Luster is kind, creative, excitable, and a bit of a goody-two-shoes, much like her dads. However she shares Starlight's shrewd intelligence and ego, as well as her irritability (though much like Starlight, Luster typically hides her anger behind a sugary-sweet smile).
Sometime soon, Luster will take a mechanic job onboard a Las Pegasus vacation zeppelin. The same zeppelin frequently featuring one rather lonely star singer, Miss Glitzi Gladmane.....

first off, totally obsessed with her. gender? hardly know her! really interested to see how this whole dynamic with starlight plays out--does her meddling in luster's life put a strain on flash & sunburst's relationship? i can imagine that flash is able to see through a lot of the stunts that starlight pulls, and is none too fond of her manipulating and guilt tripping his husband like that. does flash ever try to talk to sunburst about it, or does he also feel indebted to starlight for her surrogacy?

I think Starlight was a really good mom for much of her daughter's childhoods. Warm, approachable, loving, supportive.....sorta. Her biggest flaw was that she was suffocating, just like her own father. TOO affectionate (clingy), TOO eager to give guidance (controlling), TOO sure that she knew best, even going against Flash and Sunburst sometimes. She might have (quite secretly) hoped Luster would be a good backup in case her first daughter didn't turn out right (and kid Midnight was already worryingly interested in witchcraft), so for Midnight AND Luster to refuse to follow the princess path was a maddening blow against Starlight's ego.

God Starlight is real insufferable isnβt she?? I love this because it makes sense! Neither of Starlightβs bio kids want to be like her or follow the straight and narrow. Also I really like this version of Luster!

Phoenix views Luster as a rival and treats her as such. Luster is blind to Phoenix's salty nonsense and treats her with perfect politeness and even flirts with her, which only rankles Phoenix further. Nevermind how poofy Phoenix's feathers get at the teasing....
