It's A Date!
🕑 Added 2021-02-16 00:49:53 +0000 UTCY'know, I've been sitting on the last chapter of the Peachy/Skyla story for a long, long time. I wrote it, rewrote it, squinted at it, recruited beta readers to give feedback....but I couldn't pin down exactly what was wrong with the story. It was functional? Not a bad story, I guess. Got good feedback on it. So why did I feel so unmotivated to post it?
I finally figured it out! It's cuz it's boring. Not quite the story itself (again, it was functional), but the format! An illustration with a whole ass fanfiction stapled to it felt too limited. I'd have to draw one single snapshot of the story that had to manage to capture most of the mood, then weave an engaging tale in 4k words or less (Deviantart's description box does have a word limit, ask me how I know!), all while not boring my audience. It was a lot of pressure for just one drawing/chapter.
So I decided to try something new. I do believe the final "chapter" of this story will be a full-fledged comic! Not super super long, I'm aiming for 30 pages, but we'll see. Unlike my first iteration of the story, "Princess Charming", which stayed in one location and was veerrry dialogue-heavy, this comic will follow Peachy and Skyla through multiple locations in Ponyville, on what is not/may actually be a date. I'm tentatively calling it "It's A Date!". I don't want to hype you guys up too much since the script is still getting rewritten from the ground up, but I'm really excited about this project! :D
The above doodle is a style test, trying to give the characters simpler models that will be easier to draw over and over across many pages. I'm real bad at resisting the impulse to draw excessive detail/fluff/hair/sparkles and I'm trying to nip that habit/draw in a style that's simple, but still cute and charming. I actually had to force my brain to simplify the designs by starting out drawing with blobs of color:

The end comic probably won't be quite as simple as the doodle, and I think I'll use a smoother line brush, but I think I'm making good progress on figuring out the "look" of the comic. Ahhh I can't wait to get this thing off the ground guys

If you want any help with script/dialogue (or any kind of a one-off with more of a typical fic-like format *cough cough*) I'd be more than happy to give feedback! Only if you want it though, I'm sure you'll come up with an incredible work either way!! And I dig the style!!!

I’d still greatly appreciate the notes, as aspects of Princess Charming may get repurposed for the comic. Only if you want to tho! No pressure. I’m already a few pages into the new script, expect me to ask you to take a look at it eventually. ;)

Very excited for this! I've been a fan of this ship since you first posted about it and I'm excited for this bit of the story to wrap up. (Also, for the record, I wanted to say that I've always loved your story format — I'm excited to see how you handle a comic, because you did so so well with the very limited illustration/dialogue chapter format!)

Thanks! I'm excited too, especially after looking at how nice and neat your own comic looks sitting in your DA gallery! Ajfdfjfd so nervous to actually begin, tho. It's a tall order for me! Slow-build romance, humor, storyboarding, drawing wings, buildings in perspective, outdoor shots, indoor shots, expressions, telling a story from beginning to end, oh my! Still, I know the only way to get it off the ground is to suck it up and START. I think this week I'm going to focus on getting the story mapped out, and do a test panel or two to really lock down the look. Ah, I'm so excited! The story will focus on Skyla and Peachy of course, but we'll also get a look into current Ponyville, set some 25ish years after MLP:FiM, and a few nextgen are gonna make appearances! be it to move the plot along or just make cameos, but it'll be fun to see them "alive" in a comic, talking and moving, as opposed to existing in static illustrations.

Okay so I LOVE the fluff and detail but holy shit, 30 pages???? 1) thank you blessed mother, and 2) yeah no that’s how hands get murdered! I think they look cute even in splodgy form so I’m really excited to see what you do with them!

Cant wait! As person who prefers to draw comic over heavy dialogue segments I can say with CERTAINTY that having excessive details can really bog down a comic. Lol Im currently doing a twicord comic and Idk how it happened but TWILIGHT has more detail and more complicated to draw then Discord! How did this happen?
