I'm not super sure. Maybe the equivalent of a 2-3 year old. Definitely old enough to speak in (very) simple sentences, eg. "want cookie, p'eas", old enough to be very attached to Ahuizotl and retain vague, murky memories of him into adulthood. Old enough to be deeply traumatized from being uprooted.....but still young enough that he could eventually adjust okay and accept Daring and Cabelleron as his parents, with Ahuizotl being a mostly forgotten memory. I always had this idea of Monty reuniting with Ahuizotl, but after learning that his father did NOT abandon him and actually wanted him all along, Monty feels pretty lost and mournful. Ahuizotl is very openly loving, and Monty wants to be touched by that, but the sad fact is that Ahuizotl is a stranger to him, there is no instant bond- in fact Monty resents Ahuizotl quite a lot for being naive enough to give him away to graverobbers. It isn't until he's sitting alone at the temple and Ahuizotl offers him a bit of honeycake ("Your old favorite") that Monte chews a piece and is suddenly hit by a POWERFUL flood of nostalgia. The memories are still vague, but he does remember- pouncing and biting his father's tail, falling asleep against a strong heartbeat, being slipped a treat or two before dinner. The feelings are overwhelming and demand an immediate release- so, still chewing the cake, Monty starts to cry, for the first time in a long, long time. It's a messy, ugly cry, the exact kind that always made his parents uncomfortable- but Ahuizotl yanks him into a tight hug and doesn't let go and cries right alongside him- and it's the first time, maybe ever, that Monty feels like he's home.

th.... the paw pads..... about how old was monte when daring and caballeron snatched him? how much time did he get to actually spend with ahui once he was weaned before leaving?
