Sunday Scribbles: Devil Dad
🕑 Added 2022-09-26 00:19:18 +0000 UTCI have like a kajillion doodled ideas in my notebook, because I'm so short on time these days, I have to be pretty selective about which scribbles get picked to be made into fully colored digital drawings. Y'all only end up seeing a teeny fraction of my ideas! So rather than let these scribbles sit in my notebook indefinitely, I'm going to try to get in the habit of cleaning them up and posting em, until I beat that little "everything MUST be fully colored and detailed or you WILL die" gremlin in my brain into submission
Bruce's dad Silas is now a tasmanian devil, just like his son. This is an example of him being "playful" with his son, so you can imagine how things got as Bruce got older, and their lives got harder, and Silas got meaner. Don't eat the baby, devil dad!

It's kinda subjective whether Silas is as bad/worse than Cutthroat, since it depends on which you personally feel is worse: child neglect or child abuse. Cutthroat did the most damage to Bruce by simply ignoring him a lot growing up, treating his bright, happy, inquisitive little boy like an insect- annoying, but not worth Cutthroat's attention. Bruce internalized Cutthroat's apathy/scorn toward his existence and struggles with the idea that he is inherently worthless for....pretty much the rest of his life. Emotional neglect is no joke. Silas neglected FB Bruce as well, generally focusing his attention of his stronger, more promising son Silver. But. Silas does not ignore Bruce nearly as much as Cutthroat. When Silas' attention is on Bruce, it usually means a terrible time for Bruce. While Silas was never himself physically abusive (though he did enjoy thinking up creative punishments- eg. making Silver train in mud and rain, making Bruce run laps until he threw up), he is quite verbally abusive. He's a yeller. He never smiles or laughs. He makes his sons call him 'sir'. His idea of motivating is to call his sons worthless, then dare them to prove him wrong (a fruitless task, Silas is NEVER impressed). Silas is cruel and bitter and Bruce hears his father's voice in his head calling him stupid or pathetic every time he makes a mistake. Silas and Cutthroat are both terrible fathers, just different kinds of terrible.

i love these!! for the record i'd love to see these sketches even if they're not digitally cleaned up, seeing how artists sketch and seeing art in the WIP stages is one of my favourite things to see! :D

Is Silas anywhere as bad as Cutthroat was? I imagine since there wasn't such a thing as the tragedy with Butch, maybe the family dynamic is not as harsh as the pony expy. What's Bruce's mom like? Have you ever sketched her? :)
