The Dating Life of Dominick

It’s a tricky thing to figure out when your entire species and culture teaches boys from birth to be hyper charismatic lady killers. All the fellas in Dom’s fraternity constantly talk about chasing tail-male and female, all while Dom sips his drink in the corner frustratedly wondering why he doesn’t feel the same drive. It’s a large factor in Dominick’s near-constant feelings of being an imposter, of trying so badly to play the part given to him at birth.
He tries for a long time to date like the rest of his peers, but Dom is usually trying so hard to both force feelings of attraction and find a partner his social circle would approve of (eg. hot, upper class, a ruthless social climber) thaaaaat he ends up forgetting to form any kind of emotional connection with his dates. His partners are enamored more by his potential than his personality, typically viewing him as a handsome background prop to use in their insta pics. Dating just makes Dom feel lonely, so after a while he gives up, burying himself in his studies instead.
And that’s when he meets Tadeo~
slight character tweak here, I believe I said Dom was bisexual in his first bio, the more accurate term would be biromantic. Dom admires Tadeo for his passion and geek-ass authenticity, as their one-sided ”rivalry” turns to true friendship, Dom feels a great depth of affection for his friend that is both new and alarming. It’s confusing, because Tadeo is not the sculpted pinnacle of attraction Dom feels he’s supposed to want, but Dom still finds him pleasant to look at. Tadeo slowly becomes Dom’s favorite person, and he very much wants to be Tadeo’s favorite person. He wants to hold his roommate’s tiny hand and cuddle and maybe kiss (…if they can even figure out the logistics of that, between Tadeo’s prehensile snoot and Dom’s six inch canine teeth), and sometimes when Tadeo hits him with that dorky disarming smile Dom doesn’t know if he wants to squeal into a pillow like a teenage girl or go throw himself off the nearest cliff in terror. It’s all very confusing.

GAH I love that he’s ace!! (I’m ace-spec to and coming to terms with possibly being aro-spec as well). I have distinct memories growing up (and even now) trying to find people attractive that my friends said were or trying to describe my “type” to people who clearly didn’t have the same type of attraction. I relate to him deeply 💞💞 (Also if anyone is interested. In D20 sophomore year: Riz Gugak and his conversation with his dad about being Ace/ fears of how that affects his social life is fantastic portrayal imo)

At first, I thought he was going to be demi, but demi still implies sexual attraction (it just takes a Long time to get there)! It’s nice to hear the different stories of your characters! I love how Dom’s character has grown over time!

Yeeeah haha, basically I double misclicked. I hit the enter button too early, then when I went to write the rest of the response I accidentally hit delete instead of edit. Knakdajnadjdaj it’s just as well, I thought it’d be better for me to show the answer instead of telling. I’m glad you find Dom relatable! I listened to the life experiences of ace people and found it all quite relatable myself, as a person expected to be attracted to men. Growing up my friends would get all excited over boy crushes and male celebrities and I would feel so, so left out. So I took all this and poured it into Dom. A while ago a man hit on me at a convenience store, but I was so engrossed in my quest for a Twix bar I didn’t even realize what he said til hours later. He’d asked “What, I’m not sweet enough for you?”, to which I answered “no” and kept scanning the candy aisle. I think Dom would have a similar experience, with Leah trying to get in his pants and him being completely distracted by how hot her laptop is running, like wow Leah when was the last time you defragged your hard drive? Hang on let me clean out the fan really quick (while Leah is sulking in the background in her underwear)

Dom trying to be like "SHE'S HOT THE INTERNET SAYS SO" is such a mood, like - I was always kind of an asocial introvert and I could not for the love of me understand things like...what make someone "hot" vs "beautiful/handsome" vs "cute" or whatever, or the stupid hotness scale ("Omg, s/he's a 10/10!"). My friends tho? Beautiful and perfect in every way, even if I still wasn't interested in smooching them. (Psst, Lop - I got an alert that you replied to my last comment - the very comment featured, haha - and I couldn't find it when I opened Patreon. Dunno if you deleted it or something, but I wanted to let you know in case it's a malfunction on Patreon's part)

As a ACE and a asocial daughter to a verry social mother who loved to explore her sexuality during her adulthood and tried to make me more normal (in fear of me becoming socially isolated ) I relate to that imposter feeling so much. I never felt that I was functioning as I should be, especially around my mom. I tried and tried and tried but I didn’t feel more than friendship or social overload around my peers.

Love the way you portrayed Dom's asexuality journey, we don't get a lot of that in modern media, but you really expressed it here lovely. No doubt a lot of aces who don't even realize they're ace probably have feelings like Dom, almost like they gotta force the attraction! Poor lil (big) guy 🩷
