"Catatonic stupor", so well said. I don't really understand how a liberal democratic nation can openly sign up for this. It's like gay rights but in Nazi Germany (without the holocaust). Whatever the UK government says, the Brits just go for it without second guessing. We would think that this would only be possible in a nation already conditioned to authoritarianism, but apparently, there is something seriously wrong with the state of the British populace.

I'm British, and I shake my head on a daily basis, as things become worse and worse. These idiots are supposed to work for us, but all they do is pass laws that hinder us more and more. It's as if most of the UK citizens are in some sort of catatonic stupor, neither changing their lives in a way that will help to prevent privacy leaks, or protesting against the myriad laws that increasingly hamper our freedoms. I've tried to encourage the people in my life to adopt safer practices regarding their own privacy, but have only been met with scepticism and blank looks. Most of them have no idea what's coming. When we voted to leave the European union, most people didn't even know what they were actually voting for. Asking the average Brit on the street what the implications were regarding this vote, is akin to asking a field full of cows to describe the intricacies of algebra. Most Brits really are that dumb. Please forgive me if you are British and DO understand what's going on. I know there are a few of us out there. In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.

You are right about this. I am going to rework this and include a longer section for potential solutions. Nothing is a straightforward "just install it" solution here. This is something that will require eternal vigilance from aware citizenry. Petition and protests when paired with strong messaging and awareness can and do achieve things. But they are only effective in a society where more radical solutions (e.g. strikes) are not off the table. This is on a societal scale. Of course, on the individual level, everything in my privacy and anonymity tutorials and videos applies. And also sharing that knowledge with others, giving them a helping hand if they need it for their privacy setup, etc. Fighting and maintaining your rights often times means accepting a lot of discomfort. Those digital pacifiers are indeed what you called them. Excellent observation.

What can the average citizen do when these policies come to their country? Protesting doesn’t seem to have any significance anymore around the world. It’s like people are going to need to get really uncomfortable and have their digital pacifiers confiscated before they would actually care enough to act. The “outrage” over TikTok was astounding to me. It speaks volumes to where people’s priorities are.
