I want to balance the 'eyewitness guide' style with the books narrative.

The cache protected it from UV and severe temperature changes. lots and lots of buried stuff out there.

The cache must be extremely airtight in order to preserve plastic for milennia. Does that mean that they, others or others before them traded plastic from the more advanced birrin people abroad?

Totally agree. A reported-speech-type narrator fits perfectly to a birrin storytelling.
