There were articles & interviews about students who resented how they, their circumstances and their community were portrayed. And there was criticism from educators about how the teacher centered herself and the message it sent. My husband’s best friend (Black male) is a NYC school principal he hates this movie and says it’s always a certain type of teacher who wants to play it in class.

It’s a very well done movie, no question. I think a lot of us are challenging people to question why certain stories are told over others. When you understanding why, it sort of leaves a bad taste on your mouth. I knew they would like the movie.

A lot of people from the actual story were pissed at that movie. The person who is the lead character made herself the hero of their lives to get money & acclaim. Can’t just accept what Hollywood serves up without doing the homework.

I mean giving credit to a race that did it in the first place is kinda asinine. There’s not a problem with them helping. it’s the highlighting of it to the point where it seems it’s the only way we can do anything. Where they are the focal point of it.
