Avon was regretful at the moment but he was right. Stringer was wrong. Everything Stringer was able to do business wise was on the strength of the Barksdale brand & all the sweat equity Avon put in them streets. Avon “lost the war” because he was steadily sabotaged by Stringer who wanted to merge corporate sensibilities into thug culture and take over as CEO. If Stringer didn’t give up Avon to Colvin, I think Avon would’ve bested Marlo or died trying. And if Avon had left with Shamrock to meet up with Slim Charles, he wouldn’t have been in the spot when the cops raided AND he would’ve eliminated Marlo. The corners actually matter a lot to the business model and THAT is what Stringer forgot.

I believe Avon continued the war because his beef was with Marlo about those corners. The soldiers thought were avenging Stringer, but Avon's motives was to get the corners by any means.

I definitely don't think Stringer read those books in his crib, they were there for show. It reminds me of the speech D gave right before he was killed, where he talked about Gatsby fronting with all of the books that he never once opened to read. I think Stringer's penthouse was a reference back to D's book club interpretation of Gatsby, and people that try to front like they are different from what they used to be. I think it's just very clear on rewatch that Stringer was nowhere near as smart as he tried to pretend to be. He would often learn something in his little community college class, and then go regurgitate it to his crew, which always came off as try hard...like that college freshman that takes philosophy 101 and comes home as if they are an expert on the subject. One of the scenes that sticks out is how comically wrong Stringer was when predicting that the cell phone market was going to die because Poot had too many phones for it to be a growing market. Dude didn't know wtf he was talking about. And what I like about Avon was he had enough sense to know what he didn't know and foresee the trap Stringer would fall in by "playing those away games." Avon was spot on when he said Stringer wasn't smart enough for them out there and that all of those suits were playing him. Then when Levy laughs in Stringer's face, now String wants to get gangsta with it instead of handling it like a business man like he kept chastising Avon about.

Avon was grieving heavy in this episode when he was talking about the war being bullshit. This was like the day after he had to have his best friend, someone he considered a brother, for business, so you know he was in his feelings about it since it was fresh. Worse than that, his crew was all hype because they thought Marlo did it so they were ready to go to war for revenge, but Avon knows Marlo had nothing to do with it so it becomes clear in that moment that killing Marlo won't make him feel any better. It won't bring String back, it won't satisfy any desire for revenge. It all feels empty and meaningless and I think it took String being dead over a business decision for it to really sink in what winning this war even means. It's pyrrhic. But as Slim said, it doesn't matter who did what to who after the fact. What's done is done, if it's a lie, you fight on that lie. So Avon was going to continue the war, and tbh was going to win it that night since Slim had the scope on Marlo and was just waiting on the green light, but then the bust happened. Checkmate.

My favorite new character this season was Cutty aka Dennis . I like the idea that a man who used to be in the game and did work in the game, came from prison and realized that it wasn't in him anymore and found a passion for trying to work with the young boys . Kinda like Bubbs, his acting makes you root for him and empathize with his journey .

Fun Fact about the Wire around this time in 2004. The Producers of HBO Came to David Simon (the creator of the show) and told him since they wrapped up the Barksdale storyline with Stringer getting killed and Avon going back to prison that maybe it’s time to end the show and they even canceled the show altogether because of the low ratings. David Simon the creator literally had to beg the producers of HBO to keep the show on the air causing a 2 year hiatus and was able to convince the producers. The show writers then proceeded to defy all odds and was able to write the single greatest season in TV history with season 4
