Apple Users: Patreon App Payment News

Do you...
• Have an Apple iPhone or iPad?
• Do you use the Patreon App?
• Is your current payment method set up through the app?
What does that specifically mean...?
Do you have your billing information in the app and use the app to charge your CC, or other payment method each month, and you've never logged in through a web browser to pay for the platform?
Did you answer yes to all of those questions? Starting this November, Apple will charge all Patreon subscribers who pay for Patreon through the Patreon app/app store an extra 30%, which, with all fees said and done, is actually 43%.
So if you're in our $10 tier and you pay through the Patreon App/App Store your new mo. price will be $14.50.
To avoid new fees, we suggest changing how you pay for your subscription. Pay through a web browser. Open up a web browser like Chrome, Safari, or Firefox and login to Patreon through that browser, and set up payment there.

Thanks for the heads up! I’ve noticed Apple does this with YouTube Premium subscriptions as well and I had to switch to paying for that directly from the website to avoid paying so much extra.

Look at your subscriptions in apple general settings page. If it shows patreon then yeah. Because you’re going through a middle man. If it’s not in your apple subscriptions then you’re good

Even a few years ago when I joined I noticed apples fees were more expensive through the app than directly from patreon. So have had my payment through them since then. All your subscriptions should be directly through whatever company you’re dealing with. Middle men like apple always want a cut. Hope most see this and switch. As an atom ant that’s absurd what Apple would tack on. Fuck that

I hit up our Patreon contact with two of the most asked questions: If a member subscribed to your page in June 2024, for example, in the Patreon iOS app, their future subscription payments will not incur the App Store fee. The App Store fee only applies to new memberships purchased in the iOS app starting on November 4, 2024. Also, since Apple will be processing all transactions in the iOS app, new members who use PayPal within the app will also be subject to the fee. I’m not saying you’re wrong; I’m just worried Patreon’s information page to users is incorrect.

No, it would likely impact any tier. Essentially Apple adds fees to any purchases made through their marketplace. So if you pay for a subscription to a service through Apple (not just Patreon), Apple wants a piece of that. This can extend to things like buying premium currency in games.
