One Tree Hill 7X16: My Attendance is Bad But My Intentions Are Good
🕑 Added 2024-10-18 18:00:09 +0000 UTCUgh. Taylor. Stop. I can understand your reaction later in the episode, but just going out of your way to piss everyone off first thing in the morning is annoying. Also, if Jamie thinks you're too much. You're a problem.
Anyway, both Quinn and Taylor are currently staying at the Scott house. And of course, Taylor is annoying the shit out of everyone, so the sisters can't stop fighting. Eventually, Nathan and Jamie head to Clay's house to get some respite. And some cereal. They aren't there very long before Haley and Quinn show up, also desperate to get away from Taylor. Poor Clay. His is house is completely overrun and he's just trying to work. Finally, Taylor shows up and while Haley and Quinn try to hide from her, she reveals she brought mom with her and Haley and Quinn rush out to see her.
They seem to be having a lovely visit. Until mom tells them that the actual reason she's here is that she's got pancreatic cancer. That's one of the worse types. It's fairly aggressive and survival rates aren't great. Because of this, mom has decided not to get treatment, and just enjoy the time she has left with her family. The three sisters are not happy about this. They all want mom to get treatment, but she tells them she's made her choice and that's that. Now, to be fair, mom has had much more time to come to terms with this than they have, but still. It's hard knowing your mom has cancer and is choosing not to treat it. I know. My mom is doing the same thing. (But her cancer is not nearly as aggressive as Haley's mom's and she does see her oncologist regularly to see if things are getting worse). While Haley and Quinn are upset and sad and confused, Taylor is livid. She packs her stuff and just leaves.
Meanwhile, Alex is having a hard time on the movie set. Especially after she overhears Julian's dad tell him that Alex isn't doing well. Then she finds out that Julian put every cent he had into getting this movie funded. Which, I'm sure, just adds more pressure to her. But, turns out, Julian is a pretty great director and he's able to get Alex where she needs to go. Julian and Brooke have a couple of sweet moments. It's obvious they still love each other, but they just aren't able to get there yet. Sigh.
After being told she's 'plain' by some shoppers at Clothes Over Bros, Millie goes home and riffles through her stuff looking for some coke. She manages to find some, but I'm pretty sure she doesn't end up taking it. Instead, she goes to a meeting. That's a good step for her. I'm proud of her.

I hear you there, lol. The field just needs to be expanded to include others besides the typical mainstream primetime stuff. Heck OTH, Gilmore Girls, etc, were primetime shows, but they just aren't considered in the same field. Paul Johansson (Dan Scott) certainly also deserved to be recognized for his portrayal of Dan as well. He had so many scenes that were absolutely riveting in him dealing with the aftermath of him killing Keith. He's a powerhouse for sure, and like I said, a shame that actors like him and Joy don't have the right platform from the industry that allows them to be recognized for their talents.

Agreed. I've hardcore sobbed to stuff that the academy didn't think was Emmy worthy. It's so stupid. Have SAG, sure, but also me! Ask me, the actual viewer what I love.

This is the beginning of a real tough story arc to get through for Haley and sequentially Naley and their family.... but it's not an understatement to say that it's an amazing story and performance, totally heartfelt and poignant, and very well done and portrayed. It's such a realistic look at what a family dealing with cancer goes through.....and man alive will Haley break your heart. Seeing her so hurt and upset is gut-wrenching, and it's a rollercoaster of emotions that we aren't used to seeing portrayed from Haley because she is the one that usually holds everyone else together, as her mom said, and to see her finally break and be the one that needs help dealing and navigating her way through this, is some real powerful stuff. Joy finally gets the chance to shine in a story that's all hers, instead of her reactions being in service of others, which is what we are so accustomed to getting from her. So S7 as a whole, and this entire story arc is definitely one of the top favorites for Haley fans. When Lydia first shows back up and finds everyone hiding out at Clay's from Taylor, it was all sunshine and rainbows having the James family reunited after all these years, and then finding out that Jimmy (Haley's dad) had passed away a few years ago, and then Lydia drops the bomb on her daughters that she's also sick, man alive the tears I always felt for Haley. They came on instantly. When Haley collapses into Nathan's arms out back by their pool, when she tells him that she's not strong enough for this, that she's not the glue...her mom is, who didn't instantly break. Such heavy foreshadowing in this episode indeed. And as unfair as it seemed for Lydia to put that kind of burden on Haley, it was done for a reason, and we get to see the beginning of it unfolding in this episode. On a positive note.... did love Lydia teasing Haley about her and Nathan having another baby because they aren't getting any younger, lol. We've gotten plenty of talk over the years of Naley wanting a house full of children, so leave it to Lydia James to come to town and give them a shove, lol.

Yes...it's a disgrace how the industry rolls with their nomination process and who and what shows and actors/actresses get recognition as opposed to others. Joy and James got recognized with CW awards for Naley and Joy won out of all the network actors, and they won plenty over the years in magazine polls, etc, so they received warranted recognition in other ways...just not the big-time stuff like The Emmy's.

Oh no, you're good. I totally agree. I was thinking of both SMG for Buffy and Lauren Graham for Gilmore Girls. Those were also not 'Emmy shows.' But both actresses were totally deserving for their roles. It sucks that shows like OTH were never even in contention.

I didn't mean to confuse you when I said that Joy deserved an Emmy for her role as Haley during this storyline.... she was never nominated because shows like OTH don't get the same recognition from the industry as the other primetime shows do. So, she didn't get robbed per se at the awards, but it is a travesty that she never had the opportunity to win one because her performance during this arc was that powerful, and that's what I was referring to when I said that her acting was Emmy worthy. Hope that clears things up a bit, hehe.

That makes me sad that she never got an Emmy. There are so many amazing TV actresses that I feel should have gotten Emmy's but never did. I hate that Joy is one os them. 😢

Joy's amazing, always has been...and she so deserved an Emmy for this storyline. Her portrayal of Haley during this storyline was absolutely brilliant and I'm so glad that everyone got to see her talents and acting chops. She does not disappoint, but then again, she never does, hehe!!!

Mine too. 🤗 I love Nathan and Brooke. They have had more obvious character growth because they have both become different ppl than who they were when they started, but for Haley to achieve the same amount of growth considering she's essentially the same, just better, says a lot for her character.

Thank you. I wasn't sure. Right? I 100% agree about her mom forcing Haley to be the strong one. It's so unfair. Haley is the best character on this show. But it doesn't mean it's her job to take care of everyone all the time. Sometimes, she needs to be taken care of as well.

Yeah, it's a rough arc for me, but I totally get it. That said, I'm fairly certain Haley can do whatever they throw at her. I haven't looked up the actress afterwards, it I hope she did a crazy amount of stuff.

Agreed. I mean, I've always loved Haley, she's been my favorite since S1, but, she just keeps getting better and better.

Yes, Haley's mom is the same actress we were introduced to in season 2. Even though we barely know her mom or her sisters (and Taylor is so unlikable), Haley makes us care about what happens to her/them because of how it affects her. Haley is wrong. She is the glue, for everyone. All the time. She's a rock. We rarely get to see Haley let go and just react to all the terrible things that she goes through. I think her mom is wrong making Haley be the strong one for everyone else. It's definitely a role she was given when she was younger. I'm glad you reacted the same way when her mom said that.

This is one of my favorite arcs on the show. So emotional and difficult, but it goes somewhere really important. And gives us great Haley (and by extension Nathan) stuff.
