Unser shows up and makes Clay come down to the station. Clay shows him that the Irishman was shot by the Mayans. And the two bullets he took were meant for Clay himself. While at the station, Clay convinces Unser to bring down the Mayan dude. They come up with a truce; Clay will supply them with guns, and all the bad blood between them is under the bridge. Later, he brings it to a vote with the club and they agree. But only because a different chapter is going to take out Mayan head guy.
Meanwhile, the Irish guy who took two for Clay, needs an actual doctor. Jax goes to the hospital and convinces Tara to come and help him. While Tara is working on him, Gemma seems appreciative, but after Tara spends the night with Jax, she is less so. This is kind of crazy to me. It's obvious, the club could use an on call doctor. Even if she's only using Tara for her own personal gain, Gemma should totally be sucking up to her right now.
However, the Irish guy makes SOA promise to kill the guy at the port who blew the whistle on them. He offers to clear the gun debt and give them free guns for a month. Again, after a vote, it's decided they will take the job. Opie, who has been looking for a way to get back into the club, offers to do the hit. Jax and Bobby go along. Clay tells Bobby to make sure Opie is the one to pull the trigger, as he wants to make sure he's committed to being back. However, when Opie is faced with the task, he hesitated and Bobby does it for him. But later, Bobby lets Clay believe that Opie did it. Um, his mistress totally so them, right?
Also, at the end of the episode, we've got Jox burying Kohn, and lighting him on fire. He tosses his dad's journal in there as well. Which I thought maybe signified he was going to follow in Clay's footsteps as Gemma wanted. But a second or two later, he pulls them out. This guys moral compass is much fun to watch.
As a fun aside, Dan asked me last night who my favorite character was. I said Jax. He was surprised. He said he was sure it would be Opie. But he doesn't know how much I've watched so far. So I'm looking forward to Opie doing Dana-like stuff in the future. Lol. (Whatever that means.)

I just meant would Jax want it to get to that point. Alvarez had to kill his son because of a choice he made. A violent choice. Jax's dad is saying that each act of violence is a catalyst for the next act of violence, and becomes neverending. You can't really pick or choose because it eventually leads to the next thing. It's something you can't see in the moment. The catalyst for Alvarez killing his son was that he tried to kill Clay. I don't think Alvarez wanted this outcome, so in hindsight trying to kill Clay was probably not worth it, but who knows maybe he hated his son. Right now, as Jax is reading this, he would absolutely not want this outcome. He loves Abel. His father is telling him what could happen if the club stays on this path.

I think I explained that wrong. I feel like Gemma would like a doctor for the club. So, she should be encouraging the Jax/Tara relationship, because, ultimately, it helps the club. Unless, of course, Tara pulls Jax away from the club which seems like her biggest fear. So I guess it's a catch 22

The need for a doctor means more violence. The thing Jax is questioning. Not sure Jax would like Tara anymore involved than she already is.

I totally see similarities in Opie. It's just that we haven't gotten nearly as much of him as we've gotten of Jax so far. I reserve the right to change favorite characters in the future. Lol. I have a feeling Juice might end up being the best for comic relief. And in a show like this, we're going to need it.

Agreed. I feel like spilling blood isn't an issue. The issue is when to spill blood. He's got this moral compass that seems different from the rest of the club (Minus maybe, Opie). But it seems like it's being influenced by his dad's writing. That's a good point about how his dad felt. I was totally fooled on the Alverez thing with his son. As of right now, I don't think Jax would be able to do. And while I currently believe that would be the same 5 seasons from now, ask me then. π€£

Yeah. It's interesting to see what's important to Gemma. And I feel like it's the club. And the club needs a doctor. That seems obvious. But, if getting the doctor means losing Jax, is it worth it to her? And if she loses Jax, she also loses the doctor, so I guess it's more complex than I thought originally. But that's why this show is so great.

Jax and Opie are very rootable in both how they are similar and opposite. They both seem like good guys with good hearts in a struggle with their priorities, but they carry themselves very differently. Opie's struggles has given him that wounded dog/underdog persona where you feel sorry for him and just want to give him a hug. You root for Opie to have nice things and to be happy. Jax on the other hand, despite his struggles, has swag and an air of confidence and arrogance. It's very appealing and attractive. You root for Jax to figure it out and to do whatever it is he needs to do to do that.

When you were questioning Gemma's motivation in her conversation with Tara, I think the reason you can't tell what she's up to is because you are right on all accounts. Tara has a life. She has a job she loves. She's smart. She does not need the club or want any part of it. Gemma's all about the club. It's her whole world. It's her life. I think she loves the sense of power she gets from it and she wants the same for Jax. We can already tell she's not above manipulation to get what she wants, and what she wants is Jax 100% committed the club (and essentially her). The problem is that she's not sure if she and Jax are on the same page. He tells her one thing, but she doesn't really believe him and she's blaming Tara. Gemma doesn't know about JT's manuscript, the potential pull it has on Jax and the extent to which it's making Jax question the club. As far as Gemma knows and what Jax is telling her, is that the club is his priority and he is committed. If that's true then Jax and Tara are pretty much where they were 10 yrs ago and are bound to get hurt again. Which is why I think Tara got so emotional at the end. She knows that could be the case as well. Despite what Jax says, Gemma doesn't seem to believe him since she's always on his ass about it. She's been threatened by Tara and the hold she had and maybe still has over him since she got back. She's probably scared that this time Tara could pull him away.

Jax's struggle isn't just about whether he can pull the trigger or spill blood, whether justified or not, but it's that SAMCRO is primarily heading in this direction. Outlawing and making money is one thing, but the violence, whatever the reason and it's ramifications is another. "Each savage event was a catalyst for the next. And by the time the violence reached epic proportion I couldn't see it." This is not the club that Jax's father envisioned, but the one he saw playing out. Alvarez had to kill his son to appease the Sons for the attempt on Clay's life. Obviously, Alvarez seemed okay with this. Could Jax do this if it was Abel? Having his son and reading his father's words is opening Jax's eyes to what the club is/what it could be and if that's what he wants.

I think Jax was right not to tell Gemma cause I think that would have put her more on Taraβs back than she already is.

It's not a surprise to me that Jax is your fav. Tbf, Jax and Opie are bffs and pretty much in agreement on stuff. Their characters are similar and going through similar struggles. As you can see, Opie is also conflicted. I preferred Jax to Opie, but he's great as well. They both represent the new guard. There are so many great characters on this show. Whether I like them or not, whether they are favs or not, they really add to the show and serve a purpose. It makes the whole show entertaining.
