The Vampire Diaries 5X18: Resident Evil
🕑 Added 2025-08-13 00:08:32 +0000 UTCI'm pretty sure I hated this episode. I 100% do not care about the Travelers storyline. It's so much of the plot right now and I hate it. I don't even know what I want at this point. But it's not this. S5 has not been my favorite season, but this episode was rough for me. I do like the addition of Enzo though. Damon is better when he has a friend.
So Elena and Stefan are having these co-mingling visions of the two of them having an idyllic life. Damon is not thrilled about this, and Caroline is trying to figure out what's going on. The deduce it's the Travelers trying to bring them together for some reason (doppelgänger blood?). In one of Elena's visions, she sees an envelope with an address on it. Damon and Enzo check it out and it's the head Traveler dude (who escaped in the Bonnie situation last episode- maybe?). I think he claims that the doppelgänger legend (that Elena and Stefan are fated to be together) is false and he just put a spell on them a zillion years ago. Cool.
The Travelers are busy putting passengers in half the town (including Caroline's mom). Apparently the witches won't let them congregate together, so if they just jump into other people's bodies, it's just fine. I have no idea what they are doing or why. But that might be because I don't care.
Matt ends up dying and is on the other side. He sees Kol and Vicki. Vicki gets ripped away from him and Kol tells him that all kinds of fucked up shit is happening over there and he needs to get back in his body, go home, and tell the story so someone can help. Full disclosure: I don't care about this either.
Long story short (because I'm so not into this), Tyler stabs Sheriff Forbes with the Travelers knife. She comes back but Marcos shows up and puts a passenger in Tyler. And he's got the knife. So, he brings it to Marcos and they dump it in the fire so (presumably) we can't use it on any other Travelers.
Damon tells Elena that they can't be friends. It's too hard for him. He just needs her to stay away. However, she and Stefan seem to be perfectly friendly. He does, however tell her that people can be friends or in love, but not both. Are they trying to get these two back together? I have no idea.

lol i don’t think anyone cared about this travelers storyline its so boring. i always took this episode as a final farewell to the stefan/elena relationship. we saw this fantasy version of a future they could have had but they aren’t those people. they mentioned how it wasn’t the spell, that they fell in love on their own, had good and bad times and eventually grew apart and that’s life. the “you can either be friends with someone or in love with them, i don’t think you can be both” was them acknowledging that sure they’ll always love each other as they said, but they’re not in love anymore and are able to be friends. it contrasts damon telling her he can’t be friends with her, it’s too hard. they just need to figure out how to be in a healthier relationship if it’s ever gonna work.
