I really enjoyed this analysis of "Christine"! I'm in the opposite situation as you in that I've seen the movie a couple of times, but have never read the book despite it sitting on my shelf as part of my Stephen King collection. This first time I saw the movie, when it was released, I didn't really like it very much, but it would have been hard for me to explain why. The second time which was much more recently, I did like it and I think the reason is that I realized how one dimensional the female characters are, how interesting Christine is, and I assumed that King was making a direct reference to how women are often treated as objects in American culture, and he was rubbing our faces in it. I find it interesting that you think that wasn't so intentional on his part, and you may be right, I may have been giving him too much credit. I'll be interested to hear what you think when you see the movie :) For what it's worth, I did learn to curse at inanimate objects, not from my father so much, probably more from my grandfather. However, I've never "cursed them female", it's always "c'mon you fucker, start", or "don't do this to me you piece of shit", gender neutral. Thanks again for a really terrific piece!
