How long until you own a traded trait? | Poll
🕑 Added 2025-08-13 14:00:06 +0000 UTCWhen trading traits, people in the trade make two choices. To buy or to rent. We've been mostly following rented traits with Steph and Lexi.
Steph has been holding on to these traits for over a year and a half now. As I'm planning new stories, it raises a question.
How long can you rent a trait before you own it, and you have technically purchased it?
There are pros and cons to something like the rental defaulting to owning a trait. Especially when money is involved. Like renting would give someone a steady income on a trait to someone that needs the money. But it would limit those funds. But it would open the door to people doing a trial period and getting to easily shift to ownership.
If someone owned the trait, they would have more control of what they would like to do with it.
This would show up as a new, if it happens. If Steph and Lexi are over that period of time, they would have a set amount of time before it would apply to them.

Rent-to-own properties are real world things. I think it's like a 0 money down installment plan for an agreed upon sale of a good. Homes mostly. Pay more per month and you pay it off faster. but they're like decades long deals IIRC. They're possibly also scams, I've never done it myself so I don't know. Laws do tend to side with wealthy people though. So it depends on who has better lawyers. Is it the people renting out valuable traits that they want to keep jacking the rent on? Or the people buying valuable traits from other people because they have the money to afford it?

I voted never but I would add caveats like adding purchase options after so long of no communication

I definitely see this a potential attempt to correct for the rental trap. Like people that rent an apartment indefinitely, because they never have access to enough money to buy a condo.

If they have rented for a year then that means they are comfortable with the trade and should buy it. After a years rental they should take a purchase option.
