What to do to fix a mix??

If you find that it "sucks overall" use sends and push into distortion, parallel compression or maybe overall reverb. The overall suckiness needs to be defined as much as possible. Always, bounce a before and after so that you can quickly double check your versions and always check with your reference.
Second, how do you keep yourself focussed or have a roadmap? Use color codes and name your tracks. Always have the same colors and order of tracks. It will help you out a lot.

Or the other way around - not using so many returns during composing stage. One short reverb, one exciter and maybe one delay / creative fx. And not to focus so much on mixing approach during creating ideas. I guess it's the problem many producers have, when they are not sure what's exactely going on with sound. Start tweaking too much and go into details in the early creative stage. Maybe you can also export your returns before you start the mix? I know it's annoying when it's too many
Thanks Guido, totally agree with color codes, track names, having proper groups etc.Probably I overused send return tracks, in early stage of production (ideas / sound design) it's faster, but in mixing stage it's not precise enough (eg. using exciters for making everything brighter or mono overdrives for making things not too wide) and when you have 9 return tracks things are getting complicated too much. So in a couple of last projects I usually delete 3-4 returns and try to make everything right on tracks or groups.
