342 - ALIEN (1979) + THE SUCKLING (1990)
🕑 Added 2024-08-18 19:01:23 +0000 UTCHosts Josh and Jamie discuss gruesome, claustrophobic creature features (that are also sort of slashers) with incredible analog monster FX via a double feature of Ridley Scott’s iconic and perfectly designed science-fiction horror organism ALIEN (1979) and the tasteless, mutated back-alley abortion B-movie THE SUCKLING (1990).
See you all in a week's time where we'll be back with a special guest talking about Brandon Lee in RAPID FIRE (1992) and THE CROW (1994). Keep it sleazy!

OK "over half his scenes" was 4am-brain hyperbole lol BUT defo breakfast scenes and in the lab. Holm's performance is the one that gets me more and more each watch. How he casually/sneakily switches off the monitors (showing Kane's little bundle of joy!), much like Joey Pants would 20 years later in the Matrix (which in a film of homages has to be a homage, no?). AND that weird little running in place thing (Is it robot shit? I always read it as nerves, excitement even). AND that second breakfast scene how he's just WATCHING. Oh AND AND AND the fourth wall break in the fight scene! After the camera operator jostles something and he turns and looks straight at you! Apparently an accident they liked, but mirrors the opening with the phantom door opening you point out. Like how Arnold was only scary in T1, where there was actual malevolence and disdain for humans under the "cold dead machine" bit, Ash is so scary because I don't know how much of him is human... but it's not nothing. Rather like the penis-vagina monster itself (I mean, like, who's the REAL alien, man?). Related to that last thing, I really like your emphasis on how the humanoid features actually enhance the horror of the alien as the child of Kane's quasi- (ultra-?) rape. I understand the mild disappointment of the "guy in a suit" detracting from the Lovecraftian otherness, and it's ultimately one of those trade-offs heavily influenced by practical and commercial concerns, but your bringing up the "Child of Kane" line (which usually just breezes by me) really cemented that element for me. Getting carried away in the comments like a total neek over here 🙃 Just super gassed to finally get all the episodes! Cheers fellas!

Late to the party, just here to say the white pus or whatever inside Ash: milk. He spends the whole film, at least half his scenes, drinking glasses of milk. I clocked this on my like 17th viewing but it's there throughout, skim through it and see.

We need a Prometheus/Covenant episode (because Prometheus is really bad and Covenant is really good)

“Harry Stan Deanton” is the only way I’ll refer to Harry Dean from now on!!! 😂😂😂
