Sure, that could work. And you could probably get by using a lower quality simulation if its in the distance, and save some bake/render times.
I think I'll get the fog effect if I convert this to B&W and put it in the far distant. Is it reasonable to use smoke sim to make misty morning fog in animated nature scene?
