Octophobia

I did miss the danger sense evo in the spire sheet, thanks for pointing it out! And yes Activating and Aligning means it gives those points for free.

Octophobia

Because it's more powerful and complex/esoteric than the other two.

GregSandpaper

Anyone know why Door Sense is a trait, but Trap and Danger Sense are passives?

GregSandpaper

I’m guessing that non-nobles can be offered the Mer strain, but it’s harder to get. Fritz’s was influenced by both the spire and authority (decree). So I’m guessing the decree is targeted at nobles to make it easier to get the strain. Others have to rely solely on the spire, etc.

Another good point. @gregsandpaper

yohan gu

Wow, thanks for finding the previous offering! Indeed, they are evolving. Maybe there’s some reason to the changes? It could be random, the price lowering to match the lower devastation and pain replacing scorching skin in the verse just a litterary variation. But maybe you are right, it only inflicts pain and ignites the hand and this could be because Fritz has more control over the flame, meaning that this could further improve if he refuses the offer this time as well.

GregSandpaper

Agree on Adhesive Gloom, right now its biggest weakness is that enemies can step out of it and allies can step into it. Stick it on the enemies face. Problem solved.

GregSandpaper

I think refinement relates to how he used the eldritch flame inside his sanctum to refine the aberrant seed he used before.

GregSandpaper

Good point that this one maybe points to illusory pain. But does it actually burn others?

GregSandpaper

“Whole body”

GregSandpaper

Chekhov’s gun logic says he has to choose an Eldritch option at some point. He passed on the prior offering because it was pretty obviously cursed. From ch. 56 Eldritch Immolation Eerie burning, scorching skin, twisting turning, blaze within. Coat your skin and Sanctum in a layer of Eldritch Flame. Alignment: Chaos, Fire, Ruin, Shadow. Cost: Three per minute. This time around it seems more limited (hand only vs while body and sanctum) and maybe less powerful (cost 1 vs 3), but less obviously or severely cursed (pain instead of scorching skin). Hand of Eldritch Flame A touch of chaos, a gift of pains, the burning hand, chars the chains. Coat your hand in Eldritch Flame. Alignment: Chaos, Fire, Ruin, Shadow. Cost: One per minute.

Merfolk all the way

yohan gu

Can non-nobles be offered the Mer strain? If it was so easy to obtain, it would be much more common and less of a honor to have. I guess Fritz will be the only one to have it offered.

yohan gu

Unlocking attributes is useful, and free points for them are much appreciated. But the use of wells is limited if one’s build doesn’t lean that way. Fritz is already quite spread out and I don’t think that a venom ability just to use his venomwell points would make sense for him. And lethargy almost certainly doesn’t work with venomwell since it’s a curse. This might be a weak argument, but I’m also not sure he wants another nefarious attribute whispering in his mind, as venomwell would probably do, dusksong is certainly enough of a push towards evil.

yohan gu

Oh, didn’t think about memory for the technique, you’re right. Plus he may remember other important stuff linked to his father and the guild, and there seems to be something to uncover there. At the cost of some sorrow, of course

yohan gu

My theory for the high number of chests they found in the eel’s nest (since there was its egg and it is close to where she waited, I assume it was its nest) is that the eel found them around the floor and collected them there for aberrant monster’s reasons. What this would mean is that floors in general have many chests, but they are hard to find. Treasure sense allowing Fritz to find a similar number of treasures per floor (or more likely, to not clog the book, fewer but better and well hidden treasures on higher floors ) will mean finding many powerful artifacts that suit their need and will represent a substantial part of the team’s fighting power, thus representing the best single power he could get. The other reason I could see for there being this many chests is they accumulated over time, but it would be weird if the prize for the same floor increased simply because it doesn’t get immediately cleared. And if there was no reason, then the windfall would feel unearned. Finally, seeing how they could find chests relatively easily through strokes of luck in vast floors, the possibility I outline, and its conclusion, seem the most plausible to me.

Malcolm Haynes

Didn’t think about the connection with his sanctum. Good observation. I don’t think the eldritch hand is a trick. And I actually like the idea that he’s not immune to the flames. There’s a cost for using the eldritch! The burning is illusory but the pain he feels using the hand is real.

yohan gu

Intense conversation incoming. Let’s make it so the Toby and Jane don’t accidentally reveal the level discrepancy to Nic. And get their story for the outside straight, with probably some people in the team asking for answers Fritz and Bert may want to give to be honest with them, but without putting them at odds with the Nightshark. And some sweet loot distribution and proposal for Rain spire climb. Maybe with a final team member to round up the count to a spire approved 9. If the last member’s name starts with S and finishes with ylvia, all the better

yohan gu

I expect, if he picks the eldritch flame, that the next trait evolution will offer him a resistance to the flame

yohan gu

Durability could be a useful attribute, always good to have some tankiness, and the Merfolk strain would probably improve his chances in the Rain spire. However, I don’t know if he wants the attention the Merfolk strain would probably get him (isn’t it something for nobles and scale guards?) and a strain specifically for water themed-spires might be shortsighted for the future. Full disclosure: my main reason for not wanting him to pick the strain is I prefer my humans to be very much human and dislike the aesthetics of merfolk, but that’s just me.

yohan gu

Eldritch flame would match him best, I don’t think essence of water or venom well will be of use to him, while Eldritch flame would recompense his long standing effort to contain and control the eldritch flame in his sanctum, on top of fitting his style. Of course, this doesn’t seem to give him immunity to his own flames, so I’d suggest he sit on the choice for now.

Veager

I think the readout is missing the danger sense evolution? The strain\trait choice seems interesting. While the merfolk strain doesn't suit Fritz build for climbing towers, it could give some nice social benefits. Maybe it would help deal with annoying nobles. Like the ones the party got into a verbal fight with in the rest zone (but its not like the nobles will actually try causing troubles outside the spire, right? They’re just bluffing :D ). Or the strain could help with getting access to the last spire in rain city. But if Fritz wants to climb more spires, than he’ll have to leave rain city and the merfolk strain will become quite useless. The eldritch flame is probably just bait again, because it doesn’t mention any resistance to said flame. While the venom thing seems thematically fitting with the whole stealth rogue thing Fritz has, but how the hell is a human supposed to use fangs in combat. But I guess he could drool venom on his weapons? Or fill bottles with them before combat? I also wonder how the whole “Activate and Align twelve points” to Venomwell works. Does he just get Venomwell with 12 point pre-allocated for free? That seems quite strong, except that he does not have any poison abilities, so the Venomwell is completely useless as the Venomous Fangs are a passive ability with no cost. He should also get a golden seed with a skipped ability as a reward. Initially I thought Treasure Sense is a solid choice (as long as it can combine with other senses, since he’s out of passive slots), but maybe there was some venom ability I forgot? I'm sorry if I'm spoiling the chapter where Fritz makes this decision. :D Tftc!

Malcolm Haynes

Tftc! I’d go with adhesive gloom for the evolution. Lets him effectively blind an opponent for the duration. Even a second makes a huge difference in combat. The other choice is more difficult. Seems a no brainer to take one of the two choices that give some advanced attributes. I’d personally take venom. He’d make for a mysterious assassin. Hide in shadows with cloak of dusk, lethargy to make them passive, finish with venom fang. But, not sure he’s cool with adding fangs and going around biting people. 😂 And he already has the dagger. His hatred of nobility probably blinds him to the merfolk strain, although it’d make his life outside the spire much easier. Bert will probably pick it for the added durability. So I’m guessing he goes with eldritch hand which seems the least powerful and isn’t clear what it does. But it fits with the mysterious powers theme he’s cultivating which means it probably has hidden depths. Interesting it has ruin and shadow. Maybe some kind of decay effect? What are refinement and shaping used to influence the choice? As for points, if he wants to unlock his father’s technique seems like he’ll need more grace and probably memory.
