"Why would backwards be a solution to this?" @ 8:28 I actually have an answer! The reverse gear is the same size at the lowest gear (giving more toque), and also most vehicles like minivans and sedans are front wheel drive, meaning all the power goes to the front tires. Backwards let's the wheels push the car up the hill rater than dragging it from the front. This puts more weight from the car into the ground, allowing for better grip and taking advantage of the added torque from the reverse gear.
