The manga spells out Miyuki's situation even more. His mom was growing disappointed in his grades and then left, that is true, and it makes sense that a kid would, seeking a reason, connect these two dots and blame himself. But that's far from all of it - his mom TOOK HIS SISTER WITH HER. The manga literally says "he wasn't chosen". His sister had better grades, so the mom took her and abandoned SPECIFICALLY him (and her husband whose company went bankrupt). Before the story starts, Kei had already returned to her dad and brother, which is implied to have been her ESCAPING her academically overbearing mom. These two both had it tough because of her inability to accept any kind of failure and surprisingly enough, we do end up seeing her before the manga ends, but no spoilers.
