Two other things: 1. Otto pushed Subaru off partially because he was losing his mind due to how his own abilities were interacting with the white whale. Saying anymore would be spoilers. 2. The white whale left Subaru alive because it thought he was so pathetic it didn’t even want to bother.

So when it says the white whale killed the first master swordsman, that’s a mistranslation I think. It was the previous master swordsman, not the first one ever.
