There might be possibility that there was no lying as she asked about witch cultists and Rem is now 100% certain he isn't connected to them in her mind. She does know that he is connected to the witch, because of the stench. But wording and question was about the cultists.

It’s not that she suspects him but she’s knows he’s somehow connected to the witch since she’s aware of the witches stench

Actually Rem doesn't suspect him anymore, and Crusch asked if she ever sensed any inclination in him, she had to lie ofc, cause she did, but she definitely doesn't suspect Subaru of being a cultist at this point in the story

The dialogue is where you really see the biggest difference between an anime adapted from an actual novel, and ones adapted from a manga The author is very particular on his word choice, and has some really wonderful prose in the novels and that shows through in the dialogue in the show.

Wilhelm is such a great character, like so many in Re:Zero. Wilhelm has 2 Ex novels dedicated to his past, how he got to know his wife and the struggles they went through etc. Crusch has one Ex novel too, split into Felix and Crusch. I still hope we get those 3 novels adapted as OVAs, cause they are phenomenal stories by themselves. And with a shitload of copium maybe before season 3.

i also want to point out that in episode 16 when crusch asked rem if she suspected subaru had any connections to the witch cult she knew rem was lying due to her divine protection of wind reading since rem knows he’s at least somehow connected to the with due to his stench

Warms my heart how understanding you have been to his character and his behaviour after what he went trough even tho we all know he f*cked up sevral times
