That's how the Monogatari series is broken up. All the bits of the Monogatari series are shorter then 86. Kizu is 3 movies, Bake is 15 episodes, Nise is 9 episodes and Monogatari Second season is the longest at 24. In this sense, Monogatari is shorter, with more overall content.

Well the people have spoken and 86 has won, photo finish at that. However, I still want to hold out hope that one day Monogatari will be in their rotation. I genuinely believe that Ben and Anna may be able to dissect and analyze the themes and nuances that show delivered better then any other reaction channel out there. I will be voting again for Monogatari on Saturday in hopes to still get the show in as I believe that they will enjoy analyzing the show. Fingers crossed that Monogatari wins Saturday. Not to throw shade but most reactors only react to what is currently the most mainstream action anime, and when they watch anything that is even remotely complicated they are completely lost and its impossible to enjoy their reaction. Teeaboo did a good one, Animiddo did a good one. Pink Cube is all over the place but sometimes he’s good too. That’s it. The others watch the show and then provide basically no feedback (or extremely surface level feedback), usually only as it’s happening and then shill for themselves and leave. That’s what I mean by good analysis - Ben and Anna have long form discussions about how different things in the show are used, what they appreciate, and how they’re interpreting things. What I’m saying is that the show is very much tailored to in-depth, analytic reactions from people who understand narrative tools and pick up on SHAFT symbolism. I would also argue that the fact that you can get lost sometimes in the Japanese wordplay is part of the fun. “It’s a uniquely Japanese cultural experience” which is part of what makes it difficult to recommend but the way it messes with meta narrative and wordplay is part of the fun imo. I can think of several other different reasons that not as many people have watched LotGH… first off it’s extremely old, secondly the fact that it’s “better” is extremely personal-preference oriented. Youre casting that judgement while not having watched all of Monogatari as well, which is pretty bananas. That’s not saying that LotGH shouldn’t be reacted to as well, it’s certainly good, but age also comes with different animation style, less fan base, harder sells to normie watchers, etc etc. My reasoning being worse only applies if you’re only looking at it from a business perspective… but this is a poll. It’s deliberately taking the decision out of their hands and giving it to their patrons.. it has literally nothing to do with their opinion on what would be a good business decision (unless you count the fact that they’re polling as a business decision). There’s several other reactors out there that do polls as well but Monogatari doesn’t lend itself to “hype-beast” reactors so the fact that it would lose (if presented at all) in those would make sense - but that’s not Ben and Anna. That’s the point. we get the choice, we can vote for what we want them to cover, the fact that you’d vote for “what’s profitable” or “what’s shorter” is just bad rationale imo; given the fact that we’re voting on the polls, they should be for the purpose of what would be good for Ben and Anna or what you want to see.. voting against something instead of voting for something is inherently different

But i feel like it if it loses now, it would proably win either in the Saturday poll or on polls in the future. Monogatari can be little niche, and not many people react to it. Or once they react to it, they dont understand wtf they're even watching (its def a show to be rewatched multiple times). But it's really good show for long discussions. i feel like they would be one of the only reactors to have a good grasp of how insane and good the Monogatari world is. I've watched about half of Monogatari and liked it. But, excuse me for putting it bluntly, your reasoning is by far worse than anything I've presented. Your basic argument is "not enough channels have tackled it and I, as a fan, want to see it more" and "the fan base will like it". Monogatari is full of absurdisms, allegories, symbolisms and stuff like half a chapter text in a single frame. It also relies a lot on regional japanese memes and brands, as well as language idioms and wordplays that do not translate into english. I believe you are wrong about the importance of the "flavour of the month" shows. Unfortunately, they wouldn't ever release their numbers, but *I* subscribed for Frieren. Do you know about Legend of the Galactic Heroes? It's a much better story than Monogatari, with better insight into characters, philosophies, politics. Do you know how many reactions of it there are? 1.5 (the 0.5 is bc they dropped it) by no-name channels. The reason: It's ~120 episodes long, if you include prequel and important side shows. tl:dr Reaction channels don't do "good anime". They do whatever they think it's the best business choice. Unless uber-popular, longer series are worse. I like Monogatari and want to finish watching it with my bestie. But I don't trust any reactor to provide any good content on it because the show itself isn't ideal for such treatment.

It’s not good rational though. Is that better? I agree keeping it respectful is good but as a Mono fan it really doesn’t get enough love and as a result there’s not a lot of reactors that have watched it. It’s niche but given where it stands on popularity versus the impact it has among people who have finished it, the fan base pushes so hard for a reason. Having people essentially just vote against it because it’s long or because it’s weird instead of it losing because it’s losing to how good 86 is, is kind of infuriating. There’s tons of “flavor of the month” shows but it doesn’t make them good - personally, I recommend shows that I think people would like, which is something I think they would appreciate given statements on their MiA finale. Monogatari isn’t for everyone, that’s for sure, but given how Ben and Anna have enjoyed the style choices in Madoka and how they have reacted to and understood the themes of another “racey” show like Mushoku Tensei I think they’d really enjoy it. And the show is basically finished, the only things that weren’t adapted are essentially epilogue books where we continue to follow the lives of the characters or get additional context about their lives.

Monogatari is def a good choice and I hope it wins. It is one of the series that lends itself to discussions quite well but pretty much no one has ever reacted to the series considering it's still ongoing to this day. So my vote goes to the Monogatari series.

I am losing faith. I can't help but agree with Nut Kon about show length though. While I think it's extremely ridiculous to think about it like that, I can't help but notice how many people are complaining about Monogatari being long despite this also being a new slot. Like, we'd be getting the same amount of content that we're getting now from the channel but we'd get Monogatari on top of that - you could say the same for 86 I suppose and technically you would also "free" this slot for a different show quicker as a result, But Ben and Anna really haven't done a long show. AoT being 89 is the longest on the channel and then there's 2 entries at 50 range (Demon Slayer and Re:Zero) but then we go into single season/two cour... Monogatari doesn't have a lot of good analysis reactors - most people don't go into enough depth and the show is also extremely difficult to properly recommend. We're lucky to have like 3 reviewers at the moment who have actually drove into this series and I am quite certain it's something Ben and Anna would do well and as a result probably enjoy a lot. But I guess we'll have to pray for a Saturday poll win and then a win on Patreon for round two..

i'd like to suggest another option of sorting the polls - by number of episodes. for someone that hasn't watched either series, and has heard good things about both of them - i'm definitely voting 86 because its a quarter of the length (or less). I don't want you guys to get stuck on a show that we don't enjoy, effectively 'wasting' the slot for a whole year (or more) and even if the choice is between two shows i equally love, i would rather you guys go through the shorter show first, then only get onto the longer show. That way i effectively get to see your reaction to both 'quicker' you would find that when you pit a short show against a long show, most of the time the shorter show will win, because the only people that would vote for the longer show are; 1) the people that really dislike the short show 2) the people that really really love the long show everyone else (the people that are neutral towards either show) will vote the shorter one, so that you would be done with it quicker and they'll get another chance for you to watch their favorite show faster. I've seen this exact scenario play out on so many polls for anime reaction patreons that its like a scripted event XD

It made sense, from a business point, to do it. Same with Frieren, which will finish in... what, 6 years at best? Manga is still ongoing. My favourite anime this season? Dungeon Meshi. YMMV My position is: Good short finished series > Above average short finished series > Good long finished series > Above average long unfinished series > Bad short finished series > Bad long unfinished series As for the why: The longer the series, the more incentive you give to people who aren't interested in the series to unsubscribe for months at a time and return later. If you finish with a series reaction within 2 months and the next poll goes up, the more people will stay subscribed for the full duration, hoping to vote in something they like next. If the channel does 3 long (say.., 60+) series simultaneously, that's 2+ months with shows they're not interested in. I could also go and compare 86 and Monogatari and why the latter isn't good for reactions, but that's not the point.

Almost nobody's recommending a chronological watch order for Monogatari. The watch order "debate" is between the source material release order, and anime release order. Shaft didn't intend to change the release order, but Kizumonogatari was delayed by many years, and later they couldn't fit everything in the second season so they released Hanamonogatari separately. So, even Shaft intended to release it in the source material order. Thus there's no reason anyone should recommend anything but that order nowadays.

Monogatari series is currently at 90+ EPISODES AND ONGOING. Eighty Six is 23 episodes. Under no circumstances would I ever suggest a reaction channel be tied down for EIGHT MONTHS (!!!) (assuming 3eps/week) on one show!

Yeah, I pretty much had to stop watching their Madoka reactions because my Blu-Ray copy just wouldn't properly sync to their TV version and it really was unwatchable. Monogatari is even worse with episodes / seasons / movies missing.

No, the reason the Anime was released the way it was is because the movies got delayed over and over for years. There was no artistic intent in releasing them when they did. They should absolutely be watched after Bake. The rest of the airing order is fine imo, but the movies should definitely come after Bake.

I’ll disagree with that, the novels and the anime are two different products, there is a reason why the studio decided to do their releases in that particular order, that’s how they wanted to tell the story, that’s the official way to watch the anime, i’m not against the chronological order but I wouldn’t recommend it as the first time experience.

I was just thinking about that too! That happens often, especially with works produced by Shaft (madoka was the same...). It's a problem where the BD version and the televised version are noticeably different. I don't remember if even the playback time has changed, but it could be that the time discrepancy is caused by things like, for example, one of them has an OP or ED or not.

While Monogatari is one of my favorite Anime and I have been waiting for them to watch it for ages, this is one of those that can't be watched on a streaming service because they either only have the TV version which sometimes is missing entire episodes, looks much worse and isn't really the final version or the subs are terrible. So if Monogatari wins they need a mod or something to help get them the Blu-Ray version and show them the correct watch order after Bakemonogatari.

I think both are very wonderful works. If I had to say, I would say that monogatari continues to be stable and interesting, while 86 gets progressively more interesting. Either way, I am looking forward to it! (I'm using deepL, so sorry if I'm wrong!)

Have you and Anna already decided which shows will be on the Friday and Saturday polls (beyond the losing option from this bonus poll)? I'm very curious to hear what you picked. Also, while I very much appreciate that your polls are separated by years, I'm wondering if you could go even further in the future (i.e. the number of shows prior to 2021 is huge, vs the number of shows between 2021 - 2023). Maybe you could alternate between 2 or 3 year periods every time a series ends and you need to create a poll. Like, when you finish watching the winner of this upcoming Friday poll, pick from a pool of shows that aired between 2018 - 2020. And when your next Saturday show is finished, maybe pick from a pool of shows that aired between 2015 - 2017. Just a thought.

I have… mixed feelings about the Monogotari series. It’s also just a lot to take on lol. TBH, I'm voting 86 because it's shorter. Monogatari is just too much. At some point it loses what makes it special and just becomes tedious and pretentious. My opinion only. If you enjoy it, more power to you.
