The whole "red string to the left pinky" can be fairly frequently seen in anime & manga. As far as I know, they call it something along the lines of the "red string of fate" in most anime, and it usually symbolizes a person's soulmate/fated partner. It's usually referred to in shoujo romance manga where love, fate & soulmates are very frequently relevant topics.
