"Weaving a Story 2: Oral Stage" is, I think, about Shinji's (Freudian) oral stage: self-absorption, selfishness, and its overcoming. "I have to win... or else I'm nothing." "They all respect me when I pilot the EVA." A sequence in which he desires to be loved, both spiritually and physically. All wounds that reach deep into his consciousness. Who is Shinji Ikari? How can he like himself, if others don't like him (except when he pilots the EVA?...)

You might have missed this because of all the WTF moments, but Ritsuko very blatantly mentioned that the salvage plan was from 10 years ago and the team back then failed their salvage operation. I believe this dialogue is supposed to answer one prominent question you raised during the discussion…
