In ancient Japan all the way through the Edo period, it was more than superstition. The child mortality rate was so mind-blowingly high, children were largely considered literal spirits. Call it religious, a coping mechanism, whatever. Like, “Ah, we created this thing that looks, eats, walks, and talks like a human, but could vanish any day because spirits are funny like that, and if it sticks around for seven(-ish) years I guess it decided to stay and be a human with us.”

Fun fact, the Japanese word for Testicle uses the radicals "gold" and "ball." That's the joke here.

a cool thing about Dandadan is how it loves throwing in pop culture references, both Japanese and western. This week we have Aira and her ball doing their best impression of Smeagol and his Precious.

There's always been a superstition where kids and animals tend to be more perceptive to the supernatural world than adults because their eyes haven't been trained by modern society or adults that they aren't "real" yet so kids generally have a better chance at seeing which is most likely why how Aira and Anna was able to see/ hear them as kids. 100% even if you don't know whether its real or not if someone seems to genuinely be giving you that advice there's no harm in trying it lol.
