Companies often lay off employees toward the end of the year to meet budgeting goals and thereby get their yearly accounting out of the "red" and into the "black". Speaking as someone who was once laid off just before Christmas, I tend to attribute such cold-hearted business practices to the more diabolical side of human nature.
