Yes. Good point. I believe he was working on his cutter. I guess it's technically not a new pitch, but one he rarely used last year, if I remember Mike's reporting on it. Is it possible using it heavily in his first Spring Training start, and likely on the sidelines, might have pushed his elbow to the breaking point? Maybe. If so, then I'll stick with my belief this is a career accumulation issue.

MikeD

Or were they prudent, which is why they picked up Fried?

Kevin Carter

Wasn’t he trying out a new pitch this spring?!

Christopher Law

Concerned but not prudent it seems

Zack

Rather lose without Bauer than win with Bauer

Nobody beat the drum of "Cole and Judge's win-now window is now and will not stay open forever" more than you. And now one of those guys' window closed. I'm not saying they can't win a title with Cole...just that he won't likely be one of the top guys spearheading the thing.

Having Soto Judge last season kept them in contention- it’s going to be an ugly summer without Soto to help Judge carry the team

It's an intriguing idea, although I suspect the 110% penalty will not sit well with Hal. It would cost them nearly $45MM to roster Monty with the penalty. Then factor in how bad he was last year, and his poor ST so far, and it seems unlikely.

David Truax

He's probably better than the corpse of Carlos Carrasco.... ijs

The Original Drew

From jomboys reporting it’s something the Yankees seemed concerned about since his opt out.

John G

They built their whole season plan around pitching and it already blew up before the season started. Feeling like this year is gonna be a total flop.

I knew as soon as I got home and saw the Patreon notification icon that it was bad news. One day you'll give us some good news Mike!

I suspect the injury was a career accumulation one. He throws very hard with quite a bit of spin, and a lot of pitches by today's standard. Any team signing a starter to a nine-year deal has to factor in a decent likelihood of TJS at some point. Maybe pushing it hard through October last year contributed. We'll never know. This is not quite the worst-case scenario. The worst case would be Cole attempting R&R, which rarely ever works, then coming back in two to three months, and then blowing out his elbow, taking out all of 25 and 26. Justin Verlander came back at 39 to win the Cy Young Award. I have no doubt that Cole will work hard to get physically back, and he is a smart pitcher. I won't predict a Cy Young, but I believe he'll have a few good years left in the arm when he returns at 35. That, however, is not going to help them in 2025.

Could a Jordan Montgomery reunion be a possibility if Arizona eats some money?

MikeD

It appears Cole had full control, meaning if he opted back in they couldn't reject it. The specifics are a bit murky as I've seen it reported both ways.

Gary D.

Get that trash outta here.

Gary D.

Thank goodness the American League is so weak. The Yankees will still likely get into the playoffs with a Cole-less roster. Fried-Gil-Rodon-Schmidt could still get the job done in the playoffs. The bullpen is still nasty, and they’ll win plenty of close games. Hope the offense can be more than just Judge this year. Go Yanks. #copium

Mike you caught a lot of heat for laying out a case for letting Cole walk after his opt-out. I hope those who flogged you for simply exploring the scenario come back and apologize. Alas, they won’t.

We're all doomed!

Alex G

Honestly, I’d really consider it. Any window to win with him has passed by.

David Truax

I know there's one ex-Cy Young winner who will pitch for basically nothing.....

Ryan H

Here’s hoping the magic sauce still exists and the Yankees pull a rabbit out of their hat

Alex G

75 win season incoming. Contention window completely shut and Cole and Judge’s primes both gone to waste thanks to this incompetent GM. Hal is such an unserious person for continuing to employ Cashman. New leadership on all fronts (front office, coaching staff, medical staff, etc.) is desperately needed.

kyle

Also i saw it reported on Twitter that Cole only threatened to opt out but never actually did. No idea if that's true or even how that works (how would i) but could be possible?

Gregory B

It's going to be a long season...and probably short as well in the wrong way.

Trade Judge to a contender
