Vocals can be a bit of a battle to get right. You're never quite sure what you're looking for or how to get it to where it should be.
This video should debunk a lot of that for you.
I've laid out the simple techniques that I use to get vocals sounding level, consistent, and natural. At the end of the day these things shouldn't be too complicated. Once you understand what you're trying to get to and how to fix certain issues, you'll be able to implement your own techniques and styles and have some fun with it!!

It can go either way. Often changes. there isnt a right answer here. Sorry for the vague answer but its true haha. But If i had a vocal first, id make the vocal sound as good as possible first, then write the track around it, use the vocal for vocal chop melodies etc, then add in any tricks.

At what stage of writing/production are you focusing on vocal processing? Before working on instrumental or do you build your instrumental around a solid sounding vocal?

These are made by distorting and EQing. the EQ is a low cut up around 1k-ish, and a high cut down around 5k but this depends on what youre affecting. have a play with it! you can add short or long reverb to it as well. if you like.

the formant changes prevents the issue for the most part. You just need to change the audio signal on each side enough. Check in mono to see if its working!

Fantastic tutorial, thank you! One question to follow up: do you find yourself fighting with many phase issues when you make vocal stacks by duping the original take versus using alternate vocal takes for the stereo spread, or do the formant and processing adjustments prevent that from becoming a problem?

Soothe is a good tool to get good sounding vocals if used correctly. In some cases it can just kill the vocal and delete needed resonance. The key is to trust your ears and do not relay entirely on the plugin.
