I didnt know about polly, so I cant compare, but what I know. Tortoise makes possible that you create speech using someones voice (i did a post using Andrew Price voice) Having it in your machine, you dont have to pay to create voices. And about the speed, it took me about 2 minutes to create a phrase. Probably it could be faster, but what got me to use this solution is the persinalization of it and to have it on my machine and not to depend on third parti service.

I'm curious why Tortoise, from what I've read it's extremely slow. I don't have much knowledge myself, I went the lazy route and used Amazon Polly for any TTS I needed.
