Think of it this way guys. The Dragons may have picked up habits and behaviors from their Riders, but the Riders picked up the same from their Dragons. The Dragon Rider hierarchy is based on a pack with an Alpha. The female dragons want the Alpha dragon, they're not drawn to the lesser males. But the Alpha is spending himself constantly on his Rider, leaving very little seed left over for the females that he would otherwise produce large clutches with to secure the next generation of Dragons and Riders. This also means that the only way to fix this situation would be to replace the Alpha with a new one. A rational hierarchy can only go so far, when half of the equation still has feral inclinations.

I'm with you on this, the fact he doesn't want to have sex with other females shouldn't have caused weak hatchlings. The neglance of duty (lack of proper food supply, care etc) could have brought weaker dragon hatchlings indirectly.

I love this story but im a bit confused on how the loss of a single male drake causes genetic damage.

This will be a nasty situation in just a week. One way to disarm all warriors for sure. So they would probably want to imprison or kill them on sight, so the dragon may try to defend his lover but they would be forced to flee and disappear from the sight of the world. Or they would be simply killed.
