Wandering Agent

They don't want her to use mana for purposes that are not very 'useful' not that she shouldn't use it at all.

Choboman

There's an argument that I'm surprised Alana never uses. Mana pool is like a muscle - you frequently exercise it and it gets more powerful. You wouldn't tell a warrior that he shouldn't exercise because he never knows when I might need that stamina.

Wandering Agent

Fixed. The prices for bread there are all also out of whack, but it was during a massive famine so I'm fine with that.

Stephen

Was reading older chapters and noticed an inconsistency. In chapter 19, it says 10 coppers a day is "near what a low cost laborer would make"

Stephen

She could also offer Eleanor a hot bath or a slice of sugary cake as a peace offering / bribe

D

She could make eleanor do it. Aside from being a pain, she is pretty much a free loader... could at least do something usefull. ;-)

Bridie

Ugh children.

Stephen

Kind of felt the same. It felt a bit info dumpish, maybe some Eleanor dialog to break it up

The Lost Pages

Like the chapter but I felt like the end was... lacking. Like I wanted to read Eleanor's reaction and then the story just skipped over that altogether with her going to bed. Just food for thought.

Wandering Agent

Part of Eleanor's objection to Alana's spending habits is how much mana she wastes on household chores. She could literally just hire a maid. Not that the strict orphanage running matron would really approve of that expenditure either.

Wandering Agent

Pitcher, probably with her movement spell because she's prone to using magic for whatever chores she can.

Stephen

So after Alana is done with her baths, I've often wondered... is she strong enough to drug the heavy tub to the window and dump it, or does she use a pitcher to dump it piecemeal, or does she have enough control like a wizard would to sort of syphon it through the air and out the window? ;) We've only seen her spray like a weak garden hose so far. edit: I guess the deeper question is whether bards have elemental manipulation magic or just creation magic.

Bbyh

I like the mention and treatment of fractional banking. It's realistic.

Different Nick

A peasant would have to work for a month to buy it. Assuming he doesn't have any other expenses. So it's not that cheap.

Wandering Agent

Your sense of money is off here, a laborer is making around 3 copper per day. She's making a lot of money, 1 silver is closer to $600-$700 That means that book was Around 6k, and her tuition is around 325k. It's a lot of money, she's just making a ton of money, relatively speaking.

D

Depends. If its printed, i guess the price is ok? In that case paper would be the expansive factor, while if handwritten, i guess the price is way to low.

Az6

She estimated she makes 1-2 silver per day in total, so that would be more. Consider like 1 silver is $100 (so that 3-6k monthly would make decent wages), then the book would be $1k (quite a lot), 1 gold is $2k and tuition fee with accomodations would be $50k, but that's for the whole study, so not quite a lot.

Stephen

iirc, the book Alana bought with Dras was 10 silver, or that's what she told Emil ... which feels kind of cheap now if she can make that much in 2 days ... retcon?

Stephen

I was curious why a priestess like Kala was at Dietrich's party. Was she there because she's part of his extended family or, similar to Alana, because nobles were looking for magical breeding stock?

Jachin Nelson

Thank you for the chapter
