Michael Maor

In theory maybe, however long before that the ball would melt, destroying the enchantment that let it keep accelerating. She could easily get the speed over 3km/s (that's the speed where the impact energy is greater than detonating an equivalent mass of TNT), but given the speed hadn't started creating a plasma sheath from the air when she let it go it was well below 20 km/s, probably around 9-12 km/s so the initial explosion (before the portal magic got involved would have been "only" equivalent to 9-16 times the ball's mass in TNT

Melting Sky

It was essentially a magical rail gun. For it to work the energy imparted per fall cycle from the enchantment plus gravitational acceleration simply needs to be greater than the air resistance and it will keep accelerating until the mana runs out or the projectile vaporizes itself. She even put fortifying runes on the projectile making it even more lethal since it is no longer limited by the melting point of steel. If she ramped up the scale that thing would be at least on par with modern heavy naval guns.

Johan Timmers

Its just water i am sure nobody needs that

Matthew Dennis

This should lead to a black mesa event. There is nothing preventing a parallel word from accessing/being accessed by the portals

Michael Maor

Found it. just something to keep accelerating the ball downwards - I wouldn't have thought that spell would get it that fast, but then it's magic.

Wandering Agent

Looks like I was unclear, the water is going to the bottom of the crater and disappearing, not into the spacial nonsense she made.

Melting Sky

Last chapter it was mentioned there was something added to the enchantment to speed up the ball past terminal velocity.

Michael Maor

I don't get the concern about a black hole, there's a portal the water is disappearing through but nothing else is getting sucked in. If you want to worry speculate on where the portal is leading to but black hole worries are pointless.

Michael Maor

Oh and by the way, the terminal velocity of a small iron ball is not higher than that of a human, it's actually quite a bit lower. a 5cm (just under 2inches) iron ball will have a terminal velocity of ~106kph vs. a person sky diving of 200-290 kph (depending on position).

Michael Maor

It's somewhat faster, but not only is it no where near what was described, the story specifically mentions breaking past it, but also mentions heating up from air resistance so obviously air resistance wasn't negated.

angie bell

huh, I wonder if the portal is teleporting the water? cause I really hope it's not a blackhole...

Jachin Nelson

I mean. The terminal velocity of a metal ball is way way higher than that of a human, and i imagine some of the enchantments on it would assist in negating air resistance which would allow it to fall eve faster

Michael Maor

I missed something, what magic did she use to make the ball keep accelerating past terminal velocity?

Melting Sky

Whoah, this went so much more wrong than even I thought possible. This left a lasting wound in the fabric of space-time.

Jamie Idle

Unexpected result there. Did she make a black hole?
