Hard Disk Hijinks....for Science! Oh boy.

Bolling H. Holt IV

Ah man... cool experiment, but I hate seeing perfectly-good drives sacrificed LOL. My guess is that with that magnet being so strong it perhaps misaligned the heads (at least at some point) dragging them across the disk surface, perhaps. Hmm....

Garth Beagle

poor monkey..

Jack Beckman

Would a full (not quick) format possibly save that drive?

John Boren

Sean let the intrusive thoughts win!

Allan Clipperton-Boyer

In 2001, I used a simple fridge magnet, to somehow erase the CMOS on an old 486 or Pentium 1 system. I left it sitting on the chip for a good hour or so, and when I came back, the computer wouldn't even boot. 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️ I don't know if I actually erased the chip, or something else, but there was no display out.

Tracy Jayne

Thanks for the interesting and informative shenanigans!
