Ah man... cool experiment, but I hate seeing perfectly-good drives sacrificed LOL. My guess is that with that magnet being so strong it perhaps misaligned the heads (at least at some point) dragging them across the disk surface, perhaps. Hmm....

In 2001, I used a simple fridge magnet, to somehow erase the CMOS on an old 486 or Pentium 1 system. I left it sitting on the chip for a good hour or so, and when I came back, the computer wouldn't even boot. 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️ I don't know if I actually erased the chip, or something else, but there was no display out.
