I bring my handheld yaesu out while climbing and transmit 5w GMRS to my friends who have an assortment of FRS, and to be honest, it's overkill. Its weird that I desire the rocky's built in carabiner loop over being a radio nerd when push comes to shove. I may get one eventually.

Radio nerd here. The reason they are called "Privacy Codes" is a historical chain of events sourcing from what previous systems are called. Broadly, If you have a Party Line (as in phone line) then everybody hears everything. Sometimes you only want to hear things intended for you, and that was called a Private Line, despite the fact that anybody can listen in. When this translated into radio, it became Private Line Tones, or PL tones. which is a term that's still trademarked by Motorola. The technical description of how that's implemented is CTCSS, and a later system DCS, both of which are terms that aren't trademarked. The details of the regulations around FRS, GMRS, and what you can do within each service are interesting, and perhaps there's value in giving people a guide about what they can do if they need more radio. The Rocky Talky review, however, is awesome. Those things seem ideal for going on a very long walk.
