Ive heard this riddle also! Another thing though, my grandmother had a story about separating salt and sugar as the impossible task metaphor. So maybe crossing the two?

I think that’s the point of the story 🤔 that the student uses water… and I also think he had a couple more tasks and this might’ve been the last one?

Yeah there were lots of fables about separating seeds, or rotten corn from good corn. Cinderella and Baba Yaga are two examples. That said, the easiest way to separate salt and Pepper would be using water. The salt would dissolve into the water, and then you could use a sieve. 😁

Salt and pepper thing is real!! But it's a riddle not a fable. Pour some salt and pepper together in a pile and put the shakers behind it, then ask someone to separate the salt and pepper. The 'solve' is to separate the shakers not the pile
