I would so love to have a full on debate about the minecraft movie w them. I feel they are missing a BOAT LOAD of context and have the motivations completely wrong. There is a much stronger argument for a (can be argued misguided) desire for community celebration and connection over a shared love of something that people in this demographic are deeply missing, especially post covid. also, actually watching the movie would provide a lot of context at the target audience (of 20 somethings who played minecraft growing up) shoved into the package of a kids movie, not the other way around. not to mention these events arent happening at weekend matinees with children around. people doing this do not want to ruin a childs experience, let alone see a child irl. they are going to late night, weeknight screenings in search of other like-minded people who want to join in a similar celebration with them. Desparate for a community and social connection they have near completely lost with covid. I think the rocky horror is a more apt comparison than they gave it credit for. It is not really much of an act of revellion as much as an attempt at a community rallying around something. but 🤷‍♀️also whos listening to me lmao

Agree on that unspoken companionship and communities of places opened 24/7. That is how it felt at my university library. All of us procrastinators pulling all-nighters to get assignments done. Like Anthony said, we all did something wrong to be there and many of us were repeat offenders lol

As far as movie behavior goes. I’m in favor of people cheering clapping and laughing. Especially for movies like Marvel movies cause those are made to have those moments happen. But if you’re just talking during the movie, being rowdy for no reason, looking at your phone, taking pictures, etc that is a HARD NO for me. Also, there’s no reason to throw your popcorn everywhere and make a mess for absolutely no reason. You’re just being a dick a making a mess. That’s only acceptable for the quote on quote “rowdy” screenings. I wholeheartedly agree with Beth on calling out that influencer taking pictures of the movie screen. STAY. OFF. YOUR. PHONE. IN. THE. THEATER.

Love that I’m listening to a discussion about teenagers going to movies. But for real, I did appreciate that Will brought up Covid. It is a really interesting interpretation that this “rebellion” is kind of a way to get our childhood back. The time for us to be rebellious and be disruptive was taken away. I do think for the majority of us, we don’t realize just how much of an impact Covid had on us as individuals. It’s hard enough to look inward and say “Oh, I’m this way because of this” regardless, so to reflect on how a literal pandemic affected us as individuals is just insane to think about.

I’m genuinely so glad Will brought up Covid- the classification of this behaviour as “rebellion” or kids trying to act out really overlooks that a lot of kids *don’t see this as acting out*. They aren’t TRYING to be all counter-culture, it’s the complete lack of understanding. Theatres are seen more as a place you GO to experience things like people throwing popcorn instead of a place you go to watch movies- that’s for at home streaming. If you want to settle down and watch a movie, you use your own television. If you want to experience other people, you go out.

When it comes to younger people and movies, we also need to remember how Covid affected kids. Alot of people were never taught how to exist in movie theatres because of lock downs around the world. There’s ALSO a huge “American” part of it, as the issue with movie behaviour is largely American and not as common outside.

Gotta disagree with Matt on the cheering thing. There is an appropriate amount of cheering in a movie. You can cheer without ruining another viewers experience by drowning out the audio
