One way the personality issue could be solved is by having it still in the main characters head but also as actual dialogue to the player. This still allows for the moments of "Sir why are you talking to a pillow" but let's them have personality. It also opens up the root of he finally meets someone else who comes into the shop that can hear them which then leads to further hijinks

OK, so I’m only like maybe 20 minutes into this, so I don’t know if it’s coming yet or if it might come up later, but I have to type this now in case I forget. It feels really necessary, I personally think, every single body pillow cover that you can romance should be removed from the pillow and replaced with another one if you want to romance somebody else or speak to somebody else. Like, it’s one pillow, but different covers.

What if, there’s a super hard mode. But depending on how you treated the pillow, like no PG-13+ stuff, and after an arduous story mode, the pillow comes to life, but with them having full knowledge of what you talked about and did with them, they react accordingly. So if you were ecchi with it, they’d be disgusted. Whatever the script plot line asked of you.
