(Midwest USA here) Typically they're a drier, sometimes savory variation of a bread roll. Sometimes they have flaky layers, but others (like the ones we have with sausage & gravy) are more crumbly.

As an American, you're 100% valid. I don't think I've ever had a good HOT croissant sandwich, the panini presses always use too much pressure and it loses the flakiness. They are great for (cold) chicken salad sandwiches, though!

I used to work at a donut shop and we had a gadget that just pushed the dough out in a ring shape, so the only left over dough was at the very end (whatever wouldn’t make a full doughnut). Loved hearing y’all discuss donut holes😂
