The little jingle Tony sings when he tells them about the free holiday is the opening music to a short-lived and terrible soap opera called Eldorado, about British expats in Spain that was briefly on TV around the time this aired. It's one of those pop culture references that really dates this episode. That and Gary smoking in the office. This is probably one of the best episodes of the ITV era, Tony has almost fully devolved from being relatively cool and successful with women to more of a horny loser during the course of the series, and Gary being on the brink of a nervous breakdown the whole time and particularly snapping at Mandy about the Barry White record is very, very funny. The writing and with it the whole feel of the show changes a bit at the start of S3.

Lol those scenes were hilarious 😂 and yea it did sound pretty real. I am looking forward to the next season, this has been a really great show so far.

That could've been the final episode. At this point ITV cancelled it because of low (for the time) viewing figures. 18 months later series 3 started on BBC 1 in a later time slot and it became a ratings winner. ITV must've been gutted!

Two parts I'd forgotten and was totally caught off guard by (and was chuckling to myself for a good minute or so) : Gary's delivery of the line "That's where the needle goes, you silly bitch!", and that fart at the end that sounded pretty damn real! (Always bugs me when modern TV and movies just edit the same stock sound effects in after the fact...) Roll on series 3! (The first ones that I saw as they aired and have fond memories of, so hopefully they hold up as well as I remember!)

Re Gary’s opening line comparing his guests to Pol Pot and Myra Hindley, if you’re wondering who they are all I can say is…look them both up! Pure evil.

Great reaction, Josh! This is my favourite episode so far although series 3 and 4 are stronger overall; it really does get better as it goes along. I thought exactly the same thing as you about the "free holiday" to Spain and whether it was worth it to put up with the annoyance and general expense of having such awful guests. The cost of travel in Europe from the UK is set to increase for numerous reasons but Spain especially is renowned for being a comparatively inexpensive destination, so much choice for all budgets, and often cheaper than holidaying in the UK. It's a short flight; 2-3 hours depending on which part of Spain you fly to, and while it may have been a little more expensive back in the early 90s, with less competition and fewer budget options, it would still not have been all that steep. Definitely not worth their all putting up with "the antichrist and her cretinous boyfriend" for weeks on end. 🙃
