"Verruca" is the British word for a plantar wart on the foot. Because the warts are infectious, and spread easily if a person who has one is walking barefoot in the same area as other barefooted people, special waterproof socks can be worn as a precaution in communal swimming pools or similar places; that's what Alice brought in as a prize. It's obviously a joke that was lost on most Americans, but the character of Veruca Salt in Charlie & The Chocolate Factory was intended to make British kids shudder at the name alone!
