I'm sure the reference to War of the Worlds was Jeff Wayne's musical version, which is a classic and would be an... interesting... sound track to sex. Also, credit to Rebecca Front. I'm no expert on acting but it seems to me she is brilliant in this.

In my mind he's always been modelled on Kenneth Clarke. Old school, around in the 80s, but still a decent guy who has a certain attractiveness and charm to him. But equally doesn't like bullshit!

I can also see what Terri's on about. He's got a certain something. He's always reminded me of a non-camp, more attractive version of the guy from Rocky Horror Picture Show, Tim Curry I think he's called.

This is natural for the average viewer of a show like this. No-one, not even pure politics-wonks, get every reference in this show. The question is whether the person is enjoying the show, and I have been pleasantly surprised by how much Josh laughs along. It's also patronising to just assert that "most of the jokes are going over Josh's head". I'm sure some are, like they go over a lot of viewers' heads. But 'most'? How would you even know? "I'm 100% sure" Well, don't be. You're not a mindreader, none of us are.

I'm 100% sure that the context and most of the jokes are going over Josh's head now. They are too UK , mid 00s centric. Also not sure if he gets the political structure still... That isn't a criticism just an observation. It's very very niche and getting more so as the series has progressed

I've always respected Peter in this episode. It's VERY rare for a character to take the moral high ground and do the right thing in this show, but he's clearly a very decent man here.
