The reason the hotel manager was looking oddly at them was that in the 70s it was still considered shocking and disgusting for an unmarried couple to share a hotel room, and he was suspicious that this was the case due to Frank's continued labouring of the fact that they were married. The same thing happened in faulty towers when the guy came down asking for a drug store (to get batteries for his shaver), and Basil assumed he wanted rubbers and called him "dis-gusting!".

Mr Bedford!!!

It's funny you said the receptionist had a villain face, Neil McCarthy who played him was a character actor who was often cast as villains and henchmen in the sixties and seventies because of the way he looked, most notably in Clash Of The Titans. He'd have only been about forty here but looked a fair bit older, but then I suppose a lot of people did then.

yes it was in fawlty towers too !! the episode where Cybil is jealous and he is after the Australian girl in one of the rooms, when he is really spying on the guy in the opposite room for smuggling a girl in..of course the next day the guy sneaks her out and smuggles his mother into the room :)

Yeah as someone else has already said, Frank only saying 'Mr. Spencer' made the manager mega sus about if they were actually married or not. Back then, it was very frowned upon, and actually is the subject of a lot of other sitcom episodes (I don't know if this exactly comes up in Fawlty Towers, but it definitely does in Citizen Smith)!
Ryan Lynch
With Frank forgetting to say "Mrs Spencer", the manager looked at Betty doubtfully. As in not believing they were married and trying to share a room together out of wedlock. Frowned upon.

My brother and I would watch this stoned on repeat 25 years ago when we were teenagers, laughing like lunatics in the process.

This episode had been the original script for the series, which concerned the events of the Spencer's actual honeymoon in its earliest form.

The highest rating of any episode of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em.

It's the first time that things aren't all truly Frank's fault, that hotel really was in a terrible state.
Matthew Towner
"I'll throw that out in the morning!". 'There are no funny wardrobes in this hotel.....just funny people.' It is just loaded with joyous one liners.
