Tarot Class: Major Arcana Overview 1-11

Last week we did a general overview of the Tarot: what is is, how we use it, where it came from, etc. This coming Monday, the 18th, we are getting into the cards themselves and learning about the first half of the Major Arcana. If you're a total space brain and want to study up before class then reference the handy-dandy work sheet below. I've also attached it as a PDF that includes images of the cards to go with their descriptions.
NOTE: I am teaching using the Rider-Waite-Smith Deck
Overview
There are 78 cards in a Tarot deck.
The Minor Arcana consist of 56 cards made up of 4 suits: Pentacles, Wands, Swords, and Cups, including Court Cards or Pips.
The other 22 unsuited cards are the Major Arcana cards also known as the Trumps of the Tarot.
Pay Special Attention to these Motherfuckers! The Major Arcana are your Cosmic Heavy Hitters and each one represents a Universal Archetype. In a reading they signify Major Life Events/Themes and carry more weight/significance than the Minor Arcana who represent more day-to-day mundane matters.
Say you’re doing a reading and all the cards in your spread come up as Major Arcana cards…that lets you know the situation at hand is a big turning point.
Say you’re doing a reading and no Major Arcana show up, then you know that the situation at hand is a small one.
Say you’re doing a reading and you get a mixed bag of Major and Minor cards. Then you must look at what position your Major cards landed at in your spread.
Note for Beginners
Before we get started building our relationship with the cards one must keep in mind that being visual symbols there is a wide range of possible interpretations for each card.
Start by learning the immediate meaning of each card but don’t discount any inspiration you naturally receive from them. Let your insights be guided by reason.
Below is a handy-dandy list for each card with their: Picture, Number, Name, Planetary/Astrological Association, the “General Meaning” that you can use as a base to build off of, and the “Themes” describing various postive/negative attributes of each cards personality traits.
1. The Magician (Mercury) GENERAL MEANING: The Will to Choose
THEMES: Skills and Talent/Lies and Deception, Diplomacy/Social Climbing, Beginning/False Start, Potentiality/Impossibility, Youth/Inexperience, Hands on Learning, Street Smarts
2. The High Priestess (Moon) GENERAL MEANING: To Study in Preparation
THEMES: Intuition/Ignorance, Faith/Hysteria, Solitude/Isolation, Accumulation/Hoarding, Gestation/Hiding, Purity/Frigidity, Book Smarts, Accessing the Subconscious
3. The Empress – (Venus) GENERAL MEANING: Outburst of Creativity
THEMES: Fertility/Barrenness, Enthusiasm/Frivolousness, Expression/Immodesty, Abundance/Hedonism, Mother Nature, Unplanned Growth, Potent Feminine Creativity, Pregnancy, Nurturing, Sensuality
4. The Emperor – (Aries) GENERAL MEANING: Material Stability
THEMES: Power/Arrogance, Authority/Tyranny, Government/Bureaucracy, Maturity/Rigidity, Responsibility/Burden, King/Father, Mastery of the Material World i.e. Clothes on back, Roof over head, Food in Pantry, Gas in Car, etc.
5. The Hierophant – (Taurus) GENERAL MEANING: Divine Inspiration
THEMES: Communication/Concealment, Intermediary/Middle Man, Righteousness/Hypocrisy, Tradition/Intolerance, Belief/Dogma, Spiritual Power, Conformity, An Institution, To act as a Bridge from the Material towards an Ideal
6. The Lovers – (Gemini) GENERAL MEANING: Personal Choice
THEMES: Attraction/Repulsion, Union/Separation, Contract/Indecision, Commitment/Unfaithfulness, Social Life, Community, Ambiguity, Doing what one Loves, Pleasure, Beauty, Relationships, Emotional Domain
7. The Chariot – (Cancer) GENERAL MEANING: Action in the World
THEMES: Success/Defeat, Action/Apathy, Voyager/Plunderer, Lover/Warrior, Determination, Direction, Travel, Adventure, Momentum, Purpose, Dynamism, Colonization, Steering Energy, Synthesis
8. Strength – (Leo) GENERAL MEANING: Refined Energy
THEMES: Work Ethic/Laziness, Sexuality/Lust, Power/Weakness, Discipline/Mismanagement, Acting on Instinct/Distrust of Gut, Openness/Repression, Courage, Animal Nature, Mastery of Instinctive Forces
9. The Hermit – (Virgo) GENERAL MEANING: Prudent Wisdom
THEMES: Solitude/Delay, Meditation/Self-Pity, Experience/Doubt, Breakthrough/Crisis, Introspection/Withdrawal, Therapy, Retirement, Wisdom, Grand Father, Letting Go, Asceticism, Silence, Shed Light on the Past

11.Justice – (Libra) GENERAL MEANING: Finding Balance
THEMES: Cause/Effect, Law/Litigation, Harmony/Disagreement, Discernment/Negligence, Just Sentence/Excessive Severity, Impartiality/Bias, Authorize/Forbid, Perseverance/Stubbornness, Confronting Reality, Trial, Truth

Want to hear a creepy story? I had a kind of nightmare. I was standing in a field near my great grandmother's house. All of that is gone now, but in the dream I was living there in a trailer. In the dream I *knew* I was a powerful magician, the way you know things in dreams. It was night. I looked up at the moon, and in that part of the sky, all of the stars started to move and slide in to cluster in one group. The sun came out even though it was still night. It was a sliver like an eclipse, and pale as the moon was. I knew this was a sign that someone, or something, had cast a spell meant to kill me. I ran to my trailer to get the items I knew I would need to save myself, but I was a little slow. A person I know pulled across the field in a car, screaming, trying to run me over. I only barely managed to get into my own car so they couldn't crush me. I woke up. After that I couldn't sleep. It was unsettling enough I went through the house making sure that there -wasn't- actually someone trying to kill me. All the doors were locked. Then I sat down and watched your tarot video. It was about an hour long. I went back to bed then, but before I did I checked my phone. It said this post was about an hour old. You clicked send at the same time as the dream woke me up.
This is useful! Just so happens I’ve been trying to learn a few things to try and design my own deck. Stars aligned :)
