I've been sewing again and would like to show you what I've made. I acquired a sewing machine back in December, tentatively planned a few projects, realized I was dilly dallying out of fear, and ripped off the proverbial bandaid. I'm now 3 completed projects deep and feeling immensely proud of myself for learning so many new skills. so far I've made a tote bag, a pincushion, and a strand of bunting all from the same secondhand tablecloth! lowkey, sewing blows my mind. there's something about it that's borderline alchemical. the fact that I could turn an old tablecloth into three new practical objects makes me sooo giddy!
the beauty of hobbies is that they're something you can do purely for yourself. there's no incentive or pressure to monetize or to even be "good" at it, it's mainly a way to engage in process for the sake of it. imagine, something you can be bad at on purpose! it's awesome!! plus, it's really fun to show yourself that you're always capable of learning new skills. for a long time, art was my hobby until I made it my job and I eventually realized I needed a new hobby. something I could pour my energy into that asked nothing of me. somewhere I could fail over and over again without repercussion.
I want learning to be something I engage with for the rest of my life and creating little projects for myself is a fun way to nurture that desire. I've always really admired women whose biographies read like a list of hobbies and got really excited when I realized that I could do that, too! really cool to see peeps in the discord on the same wavelength re: DIY degrees. the feeling of getting lost in a rabbit hole? that's pure.

aww thank you so much lily! :D🫶 fr, sewing is SEW (harhar) cool and I find it especially humorous that the majority of the sewing process is not the actual sewing but understanding fabric, cutting, ironing, pinning, etc. I just finished a skirt made from thrifted curtains (a very thin cotton fabric) and all I'll say is that skirt and I went a journey together. sewing is definitely a super undervalued skill these days, so I'm really excited to keep learning more about it and upcycling more things! the slipcase project sounds really cute! I love customization projects like that, adding your personal flair to your belongings and space can really help it feel more special. :] yay for crafts! wishing us all a very crafty 2025 :D

vicki this is IMMENSELY cool, and i adore your little gremlin poses showing off your newly handcrafted treasures hehehehe 😈 🫶🏼✨ i’ve always regarded sewing as a superpower and would love to learn more about it myself! actually have a pillow i’m looking to darn and got some stabilizer for it. it is an artisanal skill that we as a society have sadly lost, which is incredibly ironic given that all sewing is human-assisted! clothes don’t make themselves! you need a person babysitting that machine, switching that thread, serging those edges! so really proud of you for diving in and having fun with it. (you can also get, like, massive amounts of excellent secondhand fabric at the bargain bins at goodwill, as a heads-up.) recently i’m into more hands-on crafts myself—i made a slipcase to house some books i want to display out of cardboard, decorative paper, foam and some felt. really felt good to make something, even though it was tedious at points because of my RA (hand tremors). i’m hoping to continue the trend by fashioning some wooden pins to pass out as freebies for the ATEEZ concert in nyc this summer! it’s just fun to have a little project to do, like you said. something to teach you things, let you mess up without real consequences and experience the joy of bringing an idea to life. if that ain’t magic, i don’t know what is 💗💗💗
